I rode to work today (as I have done it all week, and do most other days if I can help it at all), and definitely saw more bikes than I usually do. The good thing is - the riders had sensible bikes, sensible clothing, (unlike me!) helmets, and what looked generally like good setups for commuting.

My commute is short and lightly used by bikes, so my experience may not be representative of the overall SD bike commute today - reflections?

I did not visit the Pit Stop in my area as it was out of my way and I didn't have time for a detour.

Lots of people out today. Stopped at pitstop and dropped off cards. Everyone I saw was in a helmet and signaling. It was great!

Biked to work as usual. Stopped by the pit stop manned by SD Zoo and Recon Environmental. Had a free donut, some fruit, got a metal water bottle, and chatted with some people manning the stops.

There was some sort of press coverage at the Zoo stop, but I hid from the video camera but got coaxed into having my picture taken for some sort of bulletin board (I'm camera shy).

I've noticed more commuters this week on my commute.

I did 12 stops this morning. I would have hit more but needed to get to work by 9am for something.

The Zoo was the best stop of the 12.

I did my whopping 1.1 mile commute to Balboa Park and stopped off at the Zoo pit stop. Things were wrapping up by the time I got there but I did snag a few goodies (water bottle, pedometer, tire pressure gauge) and snacks. Then, as I was about to leave the cameraman from KUSI asked if we'd all group together to do the goodbye wave they show at the end of the segment. I couldn't escape so there I was, with my crooked helmet, rolled up pants holding a banana and smiling and waving like the true bike dork I am. There goes my 15 seconds of fame...

I'm with Dan! I worked the booth at USD - saw lots of commuters who use Linda Vista Rd. as a main artery to jobs up in Kearny Mesa. Bagels, coffee, water, etc. Maybe someone does it today and gets hooked.

I met Yoshi/Lee from the list! His crosscheck is beautiful, especially in person. Great talking with him!

There was a lot of folks on LVR / BMR this morning. Much more than I typically see.

Thanks Protorio and the others at USD this morning! Definitely a good vibe from all the cyclists I saw on the way to work today.

In the past some of the stops have been open in the afternoon, indicated by an asterisk or something on the official list. They also I believe used to list the times the morning ones would be open.

I hit a few stops on Balboa, no nifty metal bottles though. First one I got to do; previous years I'd had to either drive or not work. I'd love to tour some more stops sometime.

Most of them IMO seemed to be staffed by non-biking HR folks. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I don't think we need "You guys are great for commuting" pats on the back, we need to have more of us regular commuters manning these stations, chatting with people, giving route advice, etc. There's some of that going on as folks mingle at the stations, but it just seemed like we could get get more people out there if the guy at the station was obviously a commuter.

Maybe it's just my experience, though.

The Taylor St. REI/CarTrance pit stop was late opening and offered rock hard inedible bananas, apples, granola bars, water, plastic REI bottles, recovery drink, and tire levers; a far cry from the Glory Days of the Late 20th Century. Too bad the Zoo wasn't on my route that morning; that sounds like the place to have been, what with metal water bottles and bagels. What is needed in the future is a standardization of swag at all pit stops so that no one misses out on the good stuff. The pit stops also need to be open by 6 am for us early birds.

Now, on the return trip the boys at Adams Avenue Bicycles were setting up for a party and grill. I had a frosty one before the last four blocks home. Thanks, guys!

From what I've seen most of the stops are pretty close to the same: Clif bars, bananas and maybe some muffins or bagels, water and/or juice or maybe coffee.

I'm always hoping for the ones that are different. Those differences depend upon the sponsors.

REI/Caltrans was slightly different by offering water bottles. They were a little better last year with some other stuff.
USPS on Midway had USPS water bottles and USPS polo shirts.
UCSD Medical Center had UCSD iRide water bottles, blinky tail lights and iRide.ucsd.edu pens.
    Others have described the Zoo.

Sounds like I should have hit Adams Ave Bicycles on the way home.

It would be nice if the list of sites also gave the times they'd be open/closed, including afternoon times, if any.

next year i'll have Velo Cult as an official stop. i'll have it open for the morning and in the evening. i've already started the ball rolling on this. of course i'll have the kegerator out in the evening too. nothing like drunk cyclists finishing their rides :face-angel:

I was wondering if Velo Cult participated, and why not. I have to file this thread for next year.
