LSD is a good way to lose weight (Long Slow Distance)! I have a pair of cycling socks with a psychedelic "LSD" logo on them. On the soles it says "Long Slow Distance." I haven't had the nerve to ride with them yet. LEOs might get the wrong impression!

I also find that commuting with full panniers and handlebar bag slows me down. This summer I've been speeding around on racing machines with no load and enjoying myself massively. Day after Labor Day I'll be back on the boat anchor again, carrying ten pounds of lights and batteries as well as my clothes, shoes, lunch, and bottle of Mexican Coca-Cola.

An interesting quote from Wednesday's UT article "Local Control of Ex-State Prisoners Vexes Officials". It's talking about the county rather than the state having responsibility for 'low level offenders'.
"Examples would be those conviced of identity theft, auto theft, drug dealing, or repeat drunken drivers."
Is it just me, or does it seem like repeat drunken driving is a more dangerous crime than the others? I guess you might kill someone by stealing an identity or a car, or by selling drugs, but the odds seem more likely you'll kill someone by habitually taking a few drinks and getting behind the wheel.
Is this an indication we still don't take traffic safety very seriously, or am I being oversensitive? (quite possible the latter, but I'd be interested to hear opinions pro and con...)

Not hot by San Diego's standards but hot as in HOT and could melt one's bike tires standards? Hope to hear more about this and how this turns out.

Also if I'm not entirely mistaken, isn't Dubai also aiming to have the world's largest bike share in the world?

“It cost $65k to install the bike lanes. A city report showed that the number of cyclists tripled and motor vehicles are slowed down a whopping two minutes on average between Bloor and Queen. It makes no sense to remove the bike lanes.”

It will apparently cost $200,000 dollars to undo the bike lane transformation.

But it's not just bikes that Ford has a problem with in his unerring fight for the rights of people to be fat in cars. Cycling industry gives economy £3bn boost

Cycling generates nearly £3bn a year for the UK economy, a report by the London School of Economics has found. The figure takes into account factors such as bicycle manufacturing, retail and cycle-related employment. The report says £51m was raised for UK manufacturers from the 3.7 million cycles sold in 2010 - a rise of 28% on the number of cycles sold in 2009. More than a million people also started cycling last year, bringing the total number of cyclists to 13 million. Last year more than £1.5bn was spent on bikes and another £850m on accessories, with the LSE estimating that the cycling industry is now worth some £2.9bn a year. There are now 23,000 people working in cycling, contributing more than £600m to the economy in wages and taxes.

Interview with Donald Shoup: Los Angeles Making Strides with ExpressPark

DS: The main problem we already have in L.A. is the widespread abuse of handicapped placards. A disabled placard in California is like a “free parking” pass for the entire state. One of our students just finished his Masters thesis on placard abuse in downtown. He surveyed one block on Flower Street where there are 14 metered parking spaces. Most of the spaces were filled most of the time with cars that had disabled placards. For five hours of the day, all fourteen spaces were occupied by cars with disabled placards.

Although the meter rate was $4 an hour, the meters earned only 32¢ an hour in collections because most of the time the meters were occupied by cars that paid nothing. There’s a terrific financial incentive to abuse disabled placards as a free parking passes. Raising meter rates will further increase the incentive to abuse placards.

I think the city ought to have more frequent stakeouts to observe cars with placards and ask drivers when they return for the identification that comes with the placards. One city, Alexandria VA, did that because they are thinking of ending free parking at meters for placard users.

The police staked out a sample of cars with placards parked at meters and found that 90 percent of the drivers were illegally using the placards.

Some people are willing to cheat the system because they’re not willing to pay for parking. TV reporters and Los Angeles Times reporters have often interviewed placard abusers who are quite shameless, often complaining that the meters cost too much. The city ought to do more to penalize people who abuse placards.

I'm dumbstruck by that 90% figure. I have a personal bias perception that placard abuse goes on (witnessed countless times), but that sounds like a staggering number. I'm wondering what the rate would be in a San Diego study/sting.

 90% does seem insanely high.

One time I borrowed my mom's car to get some extra supplies for a holiday dinner. The parking lot was packed and I remarked to my mom when I got back that I had to drive around for a while to find a parking space. She said "Why didn't you just use a handicapped space since I have the placard?" Erm, because I'm not handicapped and it would be illegal? BTW, she is handicapped and has a legitimate need for the placard. The only times I've ever parked in a handicapped space is when I was driving her somewhere in her car.

 Rather odd - http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts/ci_18784524?nclick_check=1

Sword-wielding bicyclist threatens to cut Santa Clara pedestrian in half
Any way you slice it, this was an unusual reaction: A Santa Clara man riding his bike didn't recognize a pedestrian walking in his neighborhood, so he whipped out a sword and threatened to cut him in half, authorities said Monday. Santa Clara police said they booked 52-year-old Richard Gonzales into county jail on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats after they received a rather odd 911 call just after 2 a.m. on Saturday. When officers arrived in the residential area of the 2000 block of Jackson Court, near City Hall, a man told investigators a bicyclist had threatened him with a sabre sword, Lt. Matt Hogan said. The sabre is known for its long, curved blade and is used in fencing and during military ceremonies. As officers were interviewing the victim -- who was not hurt -- he told them Gonzales had threatened to cut him in half. The officers quickly found Gonzales, recovered the sword and arrested him, Hogan said. "The victim was simply walking down the street," Hogan said. "The suspect made some threatening comment and armed himself with this rather large sword."
The victim and Gonzales did not know each other. "It appears to be an unprovoked, random act," Hogan said. "We're very pleased the officers were there hurriedly and there were no injuries." Oddly enough, it's the second sword-wielding suspect that Santa Clara officers have arrested this year.
In the first case, police arrested a different man for driving onto a Lexus dealership and threatening an employee with a sword he pulled out of his car.

The sabre is known for its long, curved blade and is used in fencing and during military ceremonies.
A sabre used for battle or military ceremonies is a seriously dangerous weapon weighing several pounds. The sabre used for fencing is light weight (typically less than 1 pound) and flimsy. Trying to use a real sabre in fencing, even a severely dulled one would be insane and result in a lot of serious injuries.

He probably had one of these, which is scary:

Sabre

Not one of these, which would not be so scary:

Sabre (fencing)

Which reminds me, I need to start fencing again.

But alas the article on the front page of the E section was the same old thing: always wear a helmet, drivers won't see you unless you dress in bright colors. At one point the article alerts the reader to stay away from the door zone and affirms the cyclist's right to take the lane, but then later says to ride as far to the right as possible. All in all, a weak article.

About a week or so ago, a mom living in a small town in Northeastern Tennessee posted on bikeforums about an incident where a police officer brought home her 10 year old daughter because she was riding her bike home from school. She hadn't broken any laws nor had there been any safety incidents. The girl has been trained how to ride safely and legally on the road and loves to ride her bike. The officer threatened to call Child Protective Services if the mom let her daughter continue to ride her bike to school. This mom doesn't have a lot of money for lawyers so she was asking the people on bikeforums for advice. She got some. Tennessee bike/walking advocates are involved. LAB is involved. The news is covering it.

Original thread:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/762978-Police-quot-judgement-quot-versus-Law

The cops are now lying to the news saying that the girl had multiple near misses.
