Those damned caltrops were the bane of my existence when I lived in coastal north county. It's remarkable that a plant adopted bicycle tires as a vector for spreading its seeds. Sometimes I would arrive home from an MTB ride with seven in the rear and five in the front.

It was the main reason for the switch to Marathon Pluses, which was not cheap because I had to switch to a new fork ... That ended up being a good thing because I have better aero now, and better braking.

Tucked into the July issue of Bicycling magazine amidst the articles on how to shave your legs and the reviews of expensive, light weight racing bikes is an article entitled "The Good Life." It's all about the growing popularity of riding a bike to get where where you are going and the bikes and styles that accompany this trend. It starts: "The hottest revolution in American cycling doesn't have a name, a mission, or a coherent identity. But if you slow down long enough and look around, you might notice it." Sounds like the author has never heard about the San Diego Bike Union and the Down Townies, but he mostly gets it right. There is a whole new culture of bike riding emerging that even extends beyond the growing but still minority crowd of bike enthusiasts.

I first discovered the goat heads after I told my son to go off-road along the bike/ped path along Vulcan in Leucadia. A day later I found both 16 inch tires fully deflated - about 20+ thorns from goatheads on each tire. I used a slanted wire cutter and nail clipper to pull out the goatheads on each tire. The punctures were very small and produced a small leak. Submerging the partially inflated tire, we were able to count the punctures. Decided to get a new set of inner tubes instead of patching the holes.

    Wow.

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/may/31/suv-veers-off-sr56-bicyclist-killed/

Witnesses reported that driver of the SUV, a woman who was not immediately identified, was trying to transition from the No. 2 lane into the No. 1 lane when she lost control and the SUV veered to the right, up a grassy embankment and plowed through the chain-link fence and onto the bike path, said CHP Sgt. John Tyler. The SUV landed on its side.

One bicyclist, a man described as being in his 30s or 40s, died at the scene, Tyler said. The other cyclist, also a man believed to be in his 30s or 40s, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Tyler said pedestrians and other bicyclists stopped to render aid until paramedics arrived.

The more I read about biking and transportation, the more I'm convinced this country has a serious driving problem. In this case the bikes were completely separate from the roadway, and I can imagine this driver could have plowed into a school or park or home just as easily.

RE: The fatality on the 56 bike path. My wife and I rode from Black Mountain to Torrey Pines and back last fall and witnessed a similar crash. In our case the car was westbound, flipped into the median and came to a rest on the north side of the freeway, just opposite of us. It was traumatizing to watch (though quite common based on the daily traffic reports of overturned this and flipped that...) Hearing news of this tragedy is quite sobering, one would think that he or she is "safe" when riding on a dedicated bike path separated from traffic by a fence and 50'...

I've only ridden that bike path along Hwy56 only about two times. Just didn't like the high speed noise and close proximity to the highway.

That said many drivers along this route drive more than 80mph or more - it is a race track. Either they are in a hurry to get to work or home. My wife used to make this drive from Murrietta, then Escondido, for years. And she hated the rush hour traffic at the Hwy 56 and I-15.

    Sorry for posting this photo.

    Speeding kills!:face-crying:

Can you see the tire marks on the highway? It looks like the Ford Escape SUV hit the cyclists by surprise as the mishap occurred in a split second.

Saranita was driving eastbound at an estimated 65 to 80 mph when she began to change lanes. She saw a vehicle in the far-right lane, overreacted and steered the SUV hard to the right, the CHP said. The SUV traveled up a 15-foot grassy embankment, plowed through a chain-link fence and overturned on the elevated bike path.

this is what kills me about the whole thing... first, "driving eastbound at an estimated 65 to 80 mph", maybe im jumping to assumptions here but that sounds like bullshit to me! thats the kinda thing that someone tells a cop when they dont wanna admit they were speeding... & granted i dont know this stretch of road, but from the pic it doesnt look like a safe spot to be doing anything over 65... second, and the best part "She saw a vehicle in the far-right lane, overreacted and steered the SUV hard to the right"... wait a minute, am i reading this right? maybe a typo? who the hell sees a car to the right & in order to avoid it steers hard into its direction?! WTF

The velocity should be measurable by how far the vehicle landed.

Wow! Just look at those tire marks from across the #2 lane, then across the merge lane with arrow, then across the shoulder and up into the ice plant. It doesn't look like skid marks from braking, just rubber left on the road from a hard turn. Really doesn't make too much sense.

I know that spot. Have driven through there many times and rode that path almost as often on my way to Ramona.

No doubt in my mind that she was one of the many using the 56 as a personal race track and then getting surprised by the traffic near Black Mountain Rd where there are a couple merges and lane reductions. I wonder if they'll check cell phone records too. From the descriptions available so far it seems like a fatal combination of speed and lack of driving skills, possibly distracted driving. Unfortunately a very common thing on San Diego's streets.

This is worth reading and it made me L.O.L!

Mark your calendar for the weekend of July 15th, when life as we know it will end for many Angelenos, as the 405 freeway — the main artery connecting the Westside to the Valley — will be closed for construction.

While news reporters and city officials are treating this relative non-event with the same sort of frenzy that preceded the non-rapture last month, many cyclists are unlikely to even notice.

However, KCRW chief engineer Steve Herbert offered a great suggestion.

Since July’s planned CicLAvia has been cancelled anyway, why not take advantage of the closure and allow bikes to ride the 405 as sort of a mini-cicLAvia?

    Why not, indeed?

I mean, other than the risk of things falling onto cyclists from the Sunset Blvd bridge they’re dismantling. But that could be avoided by keeping bikes away from the actual construction zone.

405 Freeway Closure Will Make July 16, 17 the 'Carmageddon' of Traffic Mayhem in Los Angeles
By Simone Wilson, Mon., Jun. 6 2011 at 10:45 AM

....Better yet, as L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky is urging, just stay home for the potential "mother of all traffic jams."

"We'll be landlocked and isolated," San Fernando Valley resident Gerald Silver tells the LA Daily News today. "We're going to Ralphs early, stocking up and not leaving the house for two days."

Maybe they didn’t get the memo.

As most cyclists know, the way to get away with killing a bike rider in this country is to run him down with your car, then claim you just didn’t see him.

Meanwhile, while this is very tragic ... it is somewhat karmic.

A 23-year-old woman died at a hospital Thursday following a fiery crash at El Camino Real and Levante Street in the La Costa area, Carlsbad police said.

Witnesses said that the woman was driving south on El Camino Real about 2:53 p.m. when she attempted to pass several stopped vehicles using the bike lane on the right side of the road, said police Lt. Marc Reno.

Short version: a driver hits a bicyclist in Mississippi and stops and gets out (talking on a cell phone). He looks at the bicyclist lying there, gets back in his car and drives OVER her again! Somehow witnesses were able to stop him and pull him out of the car.

It's time to bring back public hanging.
