Got a great deal on this new-to-me 2nd bike.
(Sky, this is the bike that I asked you about yesterday at the shop regarding bringing it in next week for adjustments to the internal gear shifting, which could be smoother.)
Enjoyed reading this whole thread last week.
Now to cover the light color in stickers, or paint - hmm.
    Thank you, Salvador from Craigslist!

Hey Zonal, looks like that Dahon is in great condition. Great find. Last bike swap a few of us (Hans, Sigurd, Stephan, etc) were checking out a similar yellow Dahon (not sure who bought it though).

Just a note that if you have an older type Tikit that has the old Aardvark seat mast you may want to read this and this. Since I bought my used Tikit earlier this year, it has been folded and unfolded many times. I just discovered the noted fracture. This is possibly due to riding the bike not fully "latched in" when I was in a hurry. Lesson learned. I could have installed the upgrade to prevent this but delayed doing that. So I have two options: send it back to BF and completely replace the aardvark seatmast with the new integrated version wherein the handle is now a complete loop (check out the orange Tikit in previous pages) OR repair it with JB Weld....In applying JB Weld, do I need to sand-off the paint first to expose bare steel then apply JB Weld for a stronger cold weld or could I just apply JB Weld without sanding off the paint. I'm not too concerned about the finish since I will eventually upgrade this part... The Lazy Randonneur had some interesting review about his first Tikit

Mark- put the JB weld back in the toolbox. V groove the cracks with a grinder and MIG weld them. Then grind/file/sand the area flush and paint it. Fortunately your bike is black. If you wrap the tubes with wet rags, a few inches away from the welding, you'll have minimal impact on the surrounding paint. Don't cool the welds too fast. Doing so, would make the area brittle.

You could also braze it, which is supposedly easier for a novice and depending on who you ask, possible with MAPP gas which is easier to get.

Thanks for the advice. Since I have zero experience welding nor brazing, I may need to take it to somebody.

@Hans: do you have time to help me with this? cost? I am in no rush to fix this as I have other bikes.

@Praxis: Next year, I'll attend the brazing seminar at the bike show.

Has there been any frame fails with the Brompton?

I tend to brake frames, not because of my size, but because when I ride hard I tend to break stuff. Never was that smooth of a pedaler.

Well, at least when I was 14 it got me a new Peugeot PX10e ... then envy of my 'hood in 1971 ... after I twisted the rear triangle of a Raleigh Grand Prix.

For me, the "gate check" is a requirement. The main use will be to replace Taxi trips on business trips. Can't check in bags or bikes.

markphilips:Hans: do you have time to help me with this? cost?

I can gas braze it any time. Consider it as my way of saying thanks for your help to the biking community. a better idea would be to wait until I repair my MIG welder though, as it is more centralized heat, destroying less of your paint. Still free, just have to wait for me to repair the welder.

The offer is still open for you to borrow my Dahon. I gate check it on Southwest and Horizon, every time. It's even stainless, so you don't have to worry about scratching it! 30seconds,and you're riding.
  5.
@ Hans: Thank you very much. I'd still pay you in one way or another (tacos and beer perhaps) Let me know when you fix the MIGG welder (does it need parts?)

Brompton Limited Edition in Memory of the Royal Wedding

To commemorate the British Royal Wedding of Prince William of Wales and Ms Catherine Middleton, Brompton Bicycle Ltd of London has created a limited edition Brompton M3L with an exclusively hand-sewn Brompton S Bag and a Brooks B17 Special (Brown) saddle with copper rails.

Only 300 bikes have been hand-built in celebration of this British royal event.

I've been going in and out of many stores. Today is the first time a store manager at WholeFoods UCLA told me that "Unfortunatley, sir, due to health and food safety regulations bicycles are not allowed in the store." Perhaps my bike attire gave my cover away. Now it's time to get that rain cover to conceal my folded Tikit.

My wife has a Dahon folder, but I went a different route and got a Rodriguez Travel bike, which is a standard frame with S&S couplings in the top and down tubes. It fits into a suitcase that's actually a bit smaller than the Dahon case! Works a treat too. I have it set up with my preferred Vittoria Pave sewups, so it rides like a dream.

Has anyone heard about Citizen folding bikes? Was googling Dahon and they(Citizen) were a sponsored link. Pretty good prices, but not sure about quality...

I think I posted something about Citizen folding bikes on this thread. I've seen a couple during cicLAvia. Cute folder but stay clear from Aluminum folding frames as it has a short lifespan. Chromoly or other steel folding frames last more than a year

    Hi guys and gals!

I decided to sell my SOMA Ti Journey, a unique titanium-frame folding road bike. I have too many bikes and I don't use it enough:

    craiglist

Rare and unique titanium-frame folding road bike for one-third its original price! Robust yet lightweight. Easy to fold. Very firm lock keeps frame rigid in unfolded position for a stable ride. Quick acceleration!

Quality components: heat-treated, high strength alloy Velocity Deep-V wheels, quick-release Shimano Deore hubs, Ritchey cranks, centerpull brakes (Shimano Deore in back), 9-speed cassette (2X in front), Shimano 105 rear derailleur, Shimano Ultegra front derailleur, Shimano Tiagra/Sora "brifters" i.e. integrated brake levers and shifters, lightweight Masi SLS saddle, quick-release seat post, Nitto handlebars with cushioned black tape.

Five tires are included in this sale: two Schalbe Light Stevio 20x1 1/8, one Tioga 20x1.75 slick, one Maxxis 20x1.75 knobby, and one Primo Comet 20x1.35 tire. Four tubes are included as well.

Because of the wide range of adjustability of the seatpost, this bike can probably accommodate short through tall riders. However, the reach to the handlebars may be a bit long for short torsos, and tall people may not like riding on 20-inch wheels. My guess is that this bike fits anybody between 5'6" and 5'10".

According to the website foldingcyclist.com, "The Soma Ti Journey folding bike featured a titanium frame built by Panasonic. The bike was sold by Soma Fabrications from 2001 to 2003. It could be ordered as a frame only for $1600 or built as a road bike as shown above for $2800." <

    http://www.foldingcyclist.com/Soma-Ti-Journey-folding-bike.html

The frame alone is worth this price! The wheels and components alone are worth this price! Excellent condition! Take this Journey with you when you travel!

just let it expire or remind them. Flagging the post may get the user a negative review.
  10.
If you want to own one of the high end Bike Friday folding bikes this is it (on Ebay)!

The 14 gear Rohloff hub's retail price starts approximately at $1400 plus. The ebay listing is $1525. That's the price of the hub right there... This Folding Air Llama with travel suitcase has a titanium beam, carbon seat post, brooks saddle, carbon cranks,

I was going to buy a Citizen bike off of craigslist but kept reading reviews about the locking bolt at the hinge breaking so I don't think want to get one. I keep seeing a Dahon D7 on craigslist, do you think $250 is a fair deal?? If so, what should I check out on the bike if I were to buy it?

I'll be heading to Denver a few times a year for school and going to try and commute by bike from my friend's house. Hans, how do you gate check your bike?
  13.
Stay away from Aluminum folding bikes. Those have a very short life span than chromoly steel folders.

randomjive:.. Hans, how do you gate check your bike?
Pretty much, it's treated the same as a child's stroller. You get it tagged at the ticket counter, run it through the TSA x-ray conveyor belt chute, then carry it as if it was carry-on. As you get up to the door of the airplane, set it to the side with the other gate-check items(strollers, medical assist apparatus etc.) and board as usual. If you change planes and have a layover, when you get off the plane they will hand it back to you, and you keep it in your possession until you board your next flight. Keep in mind that I don't know of anything that folds as compact as a Dahon California, or Brompton. I don't know if a 20"tire bike would work. Even the high quality/quickest fold Tikit, may have problems. Although it also has 16" tires, it still only folds down to the size of a 20". Larger bikes can fly, but you have to disassemble them enough to fit into a suitcase, in order to avoid being raped by bicycle transporting fees.

Does your friend have room to store a bike for you? I'd consider leaving a bike there, if you're visiting 3 times a year. He/she could let other visitors use it, in trade for storing it for you.

Since Dahon doesn't make the California anymore, what's the new equivalent model? Or do they make anything that folds like that? While I'm interested in multi-modal (car/rail), the airplane gate check would put me over the top for a purchase. I just cannot afford a Brompton, though.

I am tempted by the new Citizens and Downtubes, but everyone here is cautioning against aluminum. Anyone with experience with either of these guys?

As long as you buy the aluminum folding bikes NEW then you have nothing to worry about. But be careful when buying a used Aluminum folder as those wear out very quickly than the steel folders. I bought a Giant folding bike on CL and discovered that the locking hinge didn't lock properly due to a worn out clamp.

Aluminum is a soft metal and is easily damaged compared to a steel folding frame.

Also take into consideration on how often you will fold and unfold the bike; how easy is it to fold and unfold.

mileco:Since Dahon doesn't make the California anymore,...
    Stop right there!
Who said anything about buying new? Re"cycle". For the price of a cheepo new folder, you could adopt a quality used folder and have your local bike shop lace in a cool new nexus generator hub up front, throw on a front rack, and possibly still be in budget to pick up used panniers.
A number of us on this forum have the knowledge to get you rolling. I can't volunteer their help, but you can have mine.

Welcome to the community. See you for fish tacos and collapsible conversation tomorrow!

    This is cool:

Brompton Dock dispenses rentable folding bicycles

The Brompton Dock pilot project began on July 1st, with a facility at England's Guilford train station. Users pay an annual GBP 50 ($US81) fee, which gets them a smartcard. When they show up to rent a bike from the dispenser, they just swipe that card, and a display on the dispenser will indicate which of the 40 lockers has been unlocked. They then just go to that locker and take out their bike, then carry it onto the train, stick it in their car, or unfold it and ride it straight from the station to wherever they're going.

When finished with the bike, users just repeat the same process to find an empty locker, which they put the bike in. They are automatically billed at the end of the month, for the number of days they used the bicycle. Rates range from GBP 1.60 ($2.60) per day for a one-month rental, to GBP 4 ($6.50) for a single day.

If they had this at San Francisco Airport (and others), I would so use it.

    Brilliant.
  14.
Bromptons take less space to store than the big wheeled rentals but is the N.A. commuter ready for this? I hope their pilot project takes off.
  15.
Day two of commuting about 8 miles to school in Denver... Not too bad, but I feel like I need to work a lot hard. I'm riding a Dahon Speed D7. Thinking folders aren't really for me and I'll be looking into shipping my Crosscheck out here next time. I stopped at the "College Cyclery" in Denver and they had like 8 Tikits hanging up!! Really cool looking bikes.

I have my Brompton 3 speed folding bicycle for sale. I am the original owner and I am selling it cheap, I got a good deal on it, so I'll pass it on. 800.00 firm. I am selling only because I need the money, I would keep it if I could. It has two small cracks on the front fender, that is the only problem. email me and I will respond promptly. Thanks for looking have a nice day.

    location: Pacific Beach

if you do get it and would like to trade it with a BikeFriday Tikit (8 gears for better hillclimbing). Let me know if we can do a straight trade.
