Sam:It was my first groundbreaking anything so it was neat to meet all the who's who in biking. Also a councilmember from Coronado rode over. Is Coronado big enough to have districts? Or is each mansion a district?

I honestly was surprised to meet and be introduced to Gordy Shields since I thought one named things after dead people. Good to learn that Gordy was not dead and was still riding.

Also learned that the powers that be at Caltrans bristle at the implication that they're all about cars...so apparently they're looking to not be seen that way

Normally bridges and such are only named in memorium, but Gordy is so extraordinary the normal rules don't apply to him. By the way, there were three guys from Caltrans at the groundbreaking this morning. It wasn't that long ago that there was no such thing as a district bike/ped coordinator in Caltrans, and now they are in all 12 districts. It's a huge organization and so change happens slowly, but it is happening.

Thanks to everyone who showed up this morning. I had mistakenly told the Communications staff at SANDAG that we shouldn't expect many cyclists to on a Friday morning. The turnout was great!

...saw dstone at my new place of business last night. I was busy and he was focused, but still- quite a happy happenstance to have such a friendly face appear unexpected!

Hey! I was at the Whistlestop. I was there to see my friend's band, Hotel St. George, play. I had popped out for a little while to eat at the MX joint around the corner.

I did see another bike locked up to the bike rack that I thought looked like a typical sdbikecommuter bike...wonder if that was your bike?

I saw Sigurd on his tour of San Diego, coming down from Cabrillo Monument. Sadly (unlike him) my out-of-town guests are not as keen on tackling all that ground on a bike, and we took the easy way in the car. :face-plain: Hope you didn't get too wet!

I saw a fast young lady (some sort of British or Irish accent) on a white CF road bike with a "California State Champion" stitched into her shorts around 6:45AM at the traffic light on 101 and Leucadia Blvd.. She made a nice comment about "that looks more comfortable than my bike" and then sped off down 101.

    Anyone know who that is?

(Just curious, she was quite fast).

Don't know who they were, but yesterday afternoon a little after 4:00 as I was crossing northbound on the Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Bridge bike path I saw 8-10 guys riding southbound on the road in full Radio Shack kit. Any reason for a Radio Shack team to be in town? And no, I didn't notice if Leipheimer or Horner were in the group.

The nearest event they have on their event calendar is a race in Canada today. There is nothing in the U.S. for the rest of the year on their event calendar. They could have just decided to do some training in San Diego or they could be making an appearance at some non-race event.

Levi was in the race in Canada today (tied for 37th). So was Hermans, King, Deignan, Rast, Leal, Hunter and McCartney.

Brajkovic, Lequatre, Zubeldia, Irizar, Machado, Busche, Paulinho and Oliveira were in Spain finishing the Vuelta today.

Kloden dropped out of the Vuelta about half way through. I kind of doubt that he was in the San Diego group but I suppose it's possible.

8-10 guys would be pretty much everyone else in the team which would include Horner and McEwen and Popovich.

Every day I see a lone rider with a red jersey and black stripe on the back, black shorts, sunglasses, on his way from the PB-La Jolla area going north. When I am coming down from the pool, I see him riding up the Scripps hill and on the days when I am coming north from PB he always (always!) passes me and most of the times he passes me twice. It usually happens first on the La Jolla bike path, as I am climbing the lone hill that I kind of hate, he'll swoosh by. I may see glimpses of his back as I am riding Fay Ave, Girard Ave and start riding around the base of Mt Soledad on Virginia St. (there's a bit of climbing there). I then do Prospect, Torrey Pines, Princess, Paseo Dorado, Camino del Oro down by La Jolla Shores, etc. As I start my way up my last hill (the Scripps Hill), he usually passes me again. It is actually kind of funny. It happened today and we both laughed. I like that guy! I actually tried to follow him after Girard and instead of taking Virginia directly, I followed him on Pearl which lead me to a nasty looking (to me!) climb: Cabrillo and Olivet. So it goes. I am sure he does Mt. Soledad and the SIO hill every day. Wow.

Sigurd, were you in the La Jolla bike path this morning, by any chance?

I saw dstone on his way up the SIO hill as I was waiting at the light, catching my breath (and convincing myself that: yes, I had to get to work at some point, ha).
It was like a very determined lightning bolt and just kept pedaling up up up. :)

Lisi came by and surprised me at work before meeting a friend yesterday- it was very excellent!

She came back by after she was done and decided to hang out for a bit 'till I was done- so I called dstone and we put together an impromptu Soledad ride!

Country club ascent was beautiful as always... Sigurd sounded heartbroken when I called him and he was unable to attend. :face-monkey:

Don't know how I missed this post, but yes - I was there: I usually pass through there northbound sometime around 8AM (with some some pretty wide margins on either side): Blue/silver Bridgestone road bike.

I actually was a bit jealous, but was on a "circle the city" ride when you called, so too far away to get back in time. Did a triple Soledad Sat. morning though, and another quintuple this morning, so I pretty much got that hill out of my system for a while...

Sorry I missed David's clothing; I was swamped by browsers and buyers and couldn't get away. Went through four bottles of bloody mary mixer and a liter of Polish potato vodka mixing bloodys for the masses. I took a nice meandering ride down to Sunset Cliffs to check out the afternoon loooow tide. There was a good head-high swell and with the extreme tide, the breaks looked really nice. Very little wind, but not quite glassy conditions.

Coming back along the cliffs I saw Bill Walton heading the other way. I didn't recognize him at first (I'm going blind!) but gave him the old "head nod and a howdy". It was only after we had passed that I realized it was him. He was riding a really tall goldish bike. Seemed like more than 27", probably custom made.

Nice day for a holiday cruz along the coast for us free range turkeys!

    OKB

I see him on Park all the time. Never going in the same direction though. He had major back problems that stopped him from traveling to broadcast games-- glad to see he is well enough to bike now.

My friend supports the Challenged Athlete's Ride from San Francisco to San Diego and Walton did the ride last month. And I think I saw him yesterday in Solana Beach in a group of what-had-to-be 50 riders. He is still getting around.
  7.
As I was riding west along the OB Bike Path this afternoon, I passed by two recumbents within a few minutes of each other. I could see them coming from a distance and thought I might be able to say hello to someone from the forums. The first turned out to be a tandem with a male/female crew, both wearing bright green cycling jerseys. The gal on the back was nibbling on a bag of trail mix and had a devilish grin as we passed. Ha!

The second recumbent a few moments later was a single rider, bearded guy wearing white/gray and had a big white fairing on the back of the rig. Bigger than Bills pizza box for sure. I almost think I've seen that bike on these forums before, I just can't place it.

Is it me and my current awareness about "bents" or are there really more of these bikes being ridden around town?

    OKB
