Well this is the week when the Planets align in the West!

I hope we have clear skies in the evening for good viewing over the next few days and especially Taco Tuesday - When Planets Align.
(There may be rain by Friday!)

    + = +

Just a casual glance at this Mayan Long Count (4,000 + years) Calendar shows Monday evening has a nice side by side pairing of Jupiter and Venus and Tuesday is even better!

    Monday, March 12, 2012
Venus and Jupiter are now almost at their closest together, appearing 3.1° apart this evening. Watch their orientation change drastically from day to day now that they're so close.

    Tuesday, March 13, 2012
Venus and Jupiter appear closest together tonight: 3.0° apart.

Distant Galaxies Hint at Exotic Physics

This problem led a trio of Italian physicists to suggest in 2007 that photons from a blazar’s jet are fickle: they oscillate between being photons and an as-yet-undetected particle, called an axion-like particle. Axions (and axion-like particles, or ALPs) are hypothetical, low-mass particles that interact rarely with matter. Part of their definition is that they can turn into photons (and vice versa) when in a strong magnetic field.

Now I'm starting to see stars!

    Keep looking up!

I much prefer starting my ride to work in the dark (6:00AM) and coming home before dusk, than the alternative.

Morning drivers just seem to be easier to deal with in the dark. Folks coming home in the evening? Not as much.

I was at my friend's open mic performance tonight in clairemont, and some asshole stole my saddlebag+tools

I'm actually really lucky, as he didn't take my nice pump off the frame nor my nice helmet casually buckled around the downtube (very strange behaviour for me- I almost always carry my helmet with me, not just leave it outside unsecured).

I really am really lucky, but more than anything, I feel violated by someone else fucking with my bike uninvited. I feel like I now need to double check every bolt...

I can go both ways with speed... my natural pace just seems to be higher than it used to be. Sometimes speed is a good thing. Sometimes being slower is better.

I vaguely recall a thread where some people were talking about how they prefer to ride slow but I couldn't find it. This is for those people:

I like the sentiment. I have stated often that my pace is pedestrian; not my preference, just how it is in middle age and being out of shape. That's how I roll! Speed will come with more time in the saddle. I've already noticed a difference. Don't even talk to me about hill climbing....yet.

    From our friends at SkyandTelescope.com

Venus in the Pleiades April 2-4, 2012

This happens only once in eight years so if you have clear skies, check it out! The Pleiades (Seven Sisters) are the western or Greek name for this star cluster. In Japan the star cluster is know as Subaru. When you look at the logo on a Subaru car, you are looking at a likeness of this star cluster.

    =

Note also the star Aldebaran in the "V" shaped asterism to the upper left of Venus. Aldebaran is the "red eye" of the bull Taurus. Venus will continue moving East into Taurus over the next few weeks.

=====: Binoculars or a wide-field telescope give a fine view of the delicate cluster behind Venus's overpowering glare. :=====

    =

April 2, 2012: Venus is passing through the outskirts of the Pleiades this evening through Wednesday evening, as shown in image.

April 3, 2012: Venus is the closest it will come to the middle of the Pleiades. This evening for the Americas, Venus is passing just ½° southeast of Alcyone (the brightest Pleiad) and ¼° south of the Atlas-Pleione pair. Venus is magnitude –4.5, which means Alcyone, at magnitude 2.85, is 900 times fainter!

April 4th and 5th, 2012: Venus has now moved out of the Pleiades star cluster and continues East.

    ===== Taco Riders =====

    Taco Riders:
    1) Check out Mars and Regulus (with Moon on the 2nd) in the South
    ..and..
    2) Saturn & Spica (with Moon on the 6th) in the East-Southeast.

    =

Two planet-and-star pairings mark the evening sky of spring 2012. After nightfall this week, Mars shines high in the south with Regulus to its right (by 5°). As evening advances, Saturn rises into view low in the east-southeast with Spica to its right (by 5½°).

===== Paseo de Todos Riders =====

Paseo de Todos Riders: April 6th, 2012

Friday, April 6, 2012: Full Moon (exact at 3:19 p.m. EDT). This evening the Moon shines in the east with Spica a little to its left and Saturn farther left — a pretty lineup, as shown above in the darker image. Farther to the Moon's right, look for the four-star pattern of Corvus, the Crow. Much farther to the upper left (outside the picture here) is bright Arcturus, the "Spring Star."

All this works around the world and in Oregon also if Velo Cult & crew have clear skies.

    Keep Looking Up!

I hope he reported the driver's license plate no. to the police. On another note, did the cyclist run a red light on that left turn at the end of the video?
  9.
Not bike related but is south park really that hip compared to the Venice Beach arts and hip fashion? Check out Graffiti Beach FB page history they seemed to be very successful in Venice beach with the Pop Up store and hip fashion supporting up coming and independent clothing, graphics, fashion accessories talents. They now occupy the previous Velocult space

I'm sure I've said this before - riding the coast from Carlsbad to Del Mar sucks when it is busy - especially southbound. Much to my surprise today, Leucadia was the "easiest" section. Encinitas and Carlsbad - both sucked with motorcycles pulling out into and blocking the bike lane, RV's extended into it, runners blocking it... Or of course the "I'm just unloading" people parking in the bike lane at key points. A rant, yes, but a minor one. At least the weather was decent.

I was also riding on 101 south from Carlsbad. On the descent to the beach I took the lane ( no cars behind, too many folks unloading etc) and some Fred who I passed on the descent told me I was "sloppy."

Lane Positioning, HOW DOES IT WORK?

Yeah, that is a given on a weekend holiday unless you ride really early in the morning between 6 and 8 am.

I knew that going into it... I got a late start. I rarely go south that early though, I tend to be later in the afternoon (end of a long ride from LA or something) and it is better.

We had some at the San Diego Bike Summit, compliments of New Belgium. Worth a try.
  12.
I found a couple of 22's (ounce bottles) in Sprouts (aka Henry's) of Fat Tire and Ranger for three bucks and change. After hearing of their support for the Colorado Races and their ongoing general support for bicycling around the country, it seemed the right thing to do. HA!

Generally, I like to support local brewers like Stone, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Mission, Karl Strauss and even Sierra Nevada as local or at least state located businesses. I wish we could somehow get more local brewers to support Bicycling events and endeavors. Karl Strauss usually has the beach to brewery gig, but because of renovations at the Santa Fe Street location, it is canceled this year.

There is wisdom in the old saying, "you dance with who brung ya", so let's all hoist whatever flavor of New Belgium Brewing beer you have at hand, and say.."Ride on friends, and many thanks for your support!"

Drink well and be safe out there.

They carry Surly bikes including a Pugsley fat tire, Co-Motions from Eugene,OR, and Bike Friday folding bikes from Eugene, OR. They opened their store last March. I hope they do well.

A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre. After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings, and made it safely to his van. However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas. When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error,

He replied, "Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings.

    I had no Monet
