Tonight is the last night of Mars' retrograde motion. It starts back on its normal easterly path tomorrow. It's pretty much directly overhead right now (11pm), and bright red. You can't miss it. Very close to Castor and Pollux (the Gemini stars). Just sayin'.

^^It can be surprisingly difficult to get anywhere near the fair market value when you are ready to sell. You really have to shop it around. Maybe take bids, auction style.

Yesterday evening I spend a good solid 2 hours cleaning my chain, derailleur, cogs off of all the grit and grime while listening to Gorillaz's self titled debut album (which I am enjoying quite a bit). I was sitting outside cleaning and actually got to talk to some of my neighbors who stopped by to chat. The bike acted as an excuse to start a conversation. It was a very pleasant.

And I have indeedy detected a new season in San Diego. Things smell nice and everything looks very pretty again.

on this note, i've been trying Chain-L bicycle lube. i gotta say, it's really nice for commuting. it says it lasts 1000 miles and i can actually see that happening. i have never heard a chain this quiet before.

I agree! That's my usual commute route back home when I don't feel like cranking up Texas St. or don't have a triple that day. Nasturtiums and jasmine, coastal sage scrub heating up in the sunny weather; in February there was a cluster of paperwhites just outside the guardrail about a quarter of the way up. Looks like the big nopal cactus may bloom again this spring. Red toyon berries, laurel sumac, lemonade berry, quite a pretty canyon.

Takes as long to drive the LA Marathon route in rush hour as it does for the top runners to run it:

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-lowery-marathon-20100319,0,6444549,full.story

... Yes, the good news is that I did the 26.2-mile course in 2:02:19, a good six minutes faster than the probable winner Sunday (though probably half an hour or so slower than the wheelchair winner).

The bad news is that it took two hours and two minutes to go 26 miles in L.A.

    The revolution is upon us!!

What we need to do as cyclists (and I'm talking all cyclists of every different stripe) is get out in the community, get involved in the process to make sure you get what you want. It's starting to come from the top down as you have happily noted. Implementation at the local is going to be challenging. Contact your local elected officials and let them know you (all of us) support bikes.

Amen Chris! Today the San Diego Regional Bicycle Plan was released for public review. You can see it at www.sandag.org/bicycle
Kudos to Councilman Todd Gloria who said (prarphrasing)"in my district we get as many calls about bike issues as we do about car issues." We need to approve this plan and get to work.
We're making progress! Slowly but surely...

Did a really nice ride from South Park, down Broadway, up 5th to Balboa Park; listened to some music, hung out, kicked the soccer ball; then off to University Heights (coffee shop at Adams and Park); then Blind Lady Ale House, Scoop (back in South Park); and the Station for a beer, then home. Just a really nice day for a ride, that lasted most of the day. E on the xtra-cycle; Alisa on her bike. Good day.

Just bot back form Eddie B's 71st birthday party in Ramona. That guy knows how to celebrate. Brought him and his Polish entourage a case of Polish Pivo (beer) which got sucked down promptly. Barbequed some steaks over oak fire and had some of Jolie's famous bike wheel pasta salad. Eddie made me load the RAV4 up with a cord of oak firewood, so I'm good to go for next winter.

I sure learned that the hard way! The instantaneous nature of the internet is a lesson in patience and discretion. The written, or even spoken, word seems to be much more controllable. At least with a letter one always has the time it takes to walk to the mailbox to reconsider.

Jolie and I stayed in a waterfront cabin in Sequim for a couple of days on our Canada to San Francisco tour in 1998. We took the luggage off our bikes and rode to Cape Flattery on the Makah Reservation. The bikes felt like something was wrong with them; they were so light. On the way back as the sun was setting the banana slugs began crossing the highway. Cars were running over them and leaving a sketchy, slippery road surface. It was like riding on pavement covered with slippery mud. There was a beautiful snake that lived under our cabin. It came out in the late morning when the sun warmed up the front porch. Of course, Jolie was petrified of it. Our next stop was Forks, tweaker capital of the Pacific Northwest. We saw a couple of interesting and creepy specimens. Then it was on to Kalaloch and a beautiful beach campground.

One thing that really impressed us was the courtesy of the Washingtonian drivers. This phenomenon extended itself into northwestern Oregon as well. Drivers suddenly turned mean at Coos Bay. This was a former lumber town that had finally succeeded in clear cutting all the forests in the area. The economy was moribund and the locals saw us as symbols of economic ruin. Cyclists = treehuggers.

I was probably about 10-12 when I first saw this song on MTV. I was underwhelmed as I was in my Hendrix-is-a-god-and-everyone-ought-to-be-him phase.

Now, I like the song. Fun video even!

Edit: I still think Hendrix is a God. Just don't think he was a very nice person and thus feel that people ought to have his talent and not necessarily his personality...
