I just read a good article about Bikes del Pueblo on bikesd.org. Was inspired to donate a somewhat operable road bike I have sitting in the back yard and probably will.

On another note, does anybody know of any other good charities that accept bike donations other than the typical (Amvets, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc)? I guess to be more specific, does anybody know of any other San Diego "bike-centric" charities that are in need of bicycle donations?

Let's turn this thread into a list of good places to "Donate an old bike to a good cause ..."

    :face-angel:

Old thread, but I have a bike I just don't ride anymore.. I've tried selling it, but everyone has flaked on me three weeks in a row. Is there anywhere I could donate this where I know it would get put to use rather than just sit around collecting dust like it is now?

I donated a bike to the IRC earlier this year after reading about them either here or on bikesd.org - they were collecting bikes to distribute to local refugees for transportation: http://www.rescue.org/us-program/us-san-diego-ca

Hong Tran was the contact there, email address: hong.tran@rescue.org

or you could donate it to the "PacMUle wants a MTB so he can ride in the dirt again foundation" ... its a great cause, lol :face-devil-grin:

anyways... i dont know any specific ones, but you may check at some of the local schools too. when i was in middle school i was in an after school program where we would fix up bikes for underprivileged kids. most of them came from police impound or donation. im sure there are a few of them around & they are always in need.

Just to add to this thread, I donated an old 1980's Murray road bike to the International Rescue Committee recently. They were happy to have it and will put it in the hands of a worthy person.

Info on their bike drives and collection programs:

Also if you want to volunteer mechanic / fixing time as well, let Hong know!
