The first half of this revisit of the 1991 film Slacker (full disclosure - my age puts me squarely in "gen x" target demographics) is pretty interesting. Excerpt:

"Places like Williamsburg, Austin, Portland, Oregon, and Athens, Georgia rose to prominence fueled by their lively, yeasty subcultures. Today these places, like Britain after the Empire, live on in an afterglow, preceded by their own loud cultural legacy. They become museum-like, historical Meccas of hipsterdom. That mysterious youth alchemy that once drove them slowly atrophies and becomes parody."

This is kinda why I've always loved San Diego. After having lived elsewhere for months or years, I think this is a fantastic place to live and work. You can really do whatever you want without being defined. And you can find people who are interested. We're a stone's throw away from LA and Mexico - part of both, but independent from both. We're certainly a kick-back city - our destiny since we lost the railroad to LA in the 19th century. But there sure is a lot of vibrant variety. And its a fantastic place to ride. That's facilitated by all the new paint on the streets, and hopefully more so after the Bike Summit.

Scene of a fatal truck/cyclist right hook yesterday:

    Story at bikeportland.org

I wonder how much the false sense of security created by these treatments plays in these crashes. I suspect such treatment emboldens and encourages bicyclists to mindless pass vehicles, including trucks and buses, on the right, exactly where they shouldn't... at intersections.

Here is a discussion about the crash on Facebook.

Bored on StumbleUpon brought me this:
    http://venturebeat.com/2012/07/08/portland-hipsters-raise-20k-to-make-leather-handles-for-bikes/
I think it's a great idea. The duo plans to make leather carrying handles for bikes, for going up/down stairs, etc...

I gotta find the time and resource to visit PDX soon.
