The first half of this revisit of the 1991 film Slacker (full disclosure - my age puts me squarely in "gen x" target demographics) is pretty interesting. Excerpt:

"Places like Williamsburg, Austin, Portland, Oregon, and Athens, Georgia rose to prominence fueled by their lively, yeasty subcultures. Today these places, like Britain after the Empire, live on in an afterglow, preceded by their own loud cultural legacy. They become museum-like, historical Meccas of hipsterdom. That mysterious youth alchemy that once drove them slowly atrophies and becomes parody."

This is kinda why I've always loved San Diego. After having lived elsewhere for months or years, I think this is a fantastic place to live and work. You can really do whatever you want without being defined. And you can find people who are interested. We're a stone's throw away from LA and Mexico - part of both, but independent from both. We're certainly a kick-back city - our destiny since we lost the railroad to LA in the 19th century. But there sure is a lot of vibrant variety. And its a fantastic place to ride. That's facilitated by all the new paint on the streets, and hopefully more so after the Bike Summit.

Hmmm. Sounds like a great event. Wanna go?

Portland's Best Restaurants by Bike 2012
2012 Restaurant dates are as follows:

July 10 (Interurban, 2nd Story, The Bent Brick)
August 28 (TBA)

Our “Portland’s Best Restaurants by Bike” rides have enjoyed tremendous success. What a great way to meet new people, enjoy an evening out, dress up and ride in style to some of the best restaurants that Portland has to offer! We’re proving once again that a bike is the best way to get around town in style. This is a partial list of restaurants visited:

Accanto
Aquariva
Biwa
Blue Hour
Casa Naranja
Davis Street Tavern
DOC
Eleni’s
EastBurn
Gilt
The Heathman
Iorio
Lincoln
Navarre
Nel Centro
Noble Rot
Nostrana
Paley’s Place
Park Kitchen
Pinot
TarBoush Bistro
The Maiden
Vindalho

At $60 per person, what a great opportunity to sample Portland’s finest fare.

Space is limited to 25, so grab your calendar and contact us via email or phone to purchase your tickets.

This is a spandex-free event. Participants are encouraged to flaunt their summer style. Dust off your loafers and wear a new dress.

Diners meet at Clever Cycles at 5:30 p.m and depart at 6:00 p.m. This event finishes at the last restaurant sometime after sundown and before sunrise.

It is a legal requirement that all bicycles operating at night have a fully functioning headlight. Clever Cycles requires all bikes on this ride have both a head and taillight. Your bike may feel out-of-place on this ride if it does not have fenders and a kickstand!
