    that photo was the famous Pearl Pass Colorado photo. It was taken in the earliest days of mountain biking when the bikes were called Klunkers. Klunkers were mostly 1930's beach cruisers converted using a mix of motorcycle, BMX and road bike parts. Pearl Pass is at 12,600 feet elevation. thats the beginnings of the sport right there. here's a photo of my klunker.



    the photo above that of the rider sliding out is Joe Breeze on the famous Mt Tam Repack race. the very first race in mountain bike history. Joe Breeze also made the very first legit mountain bike.

    above that is the most famous mountain biker of all time: John Tomac.

    it's hard to believe that 2003 still had no helmets. in the mountain biking world starting in the early 80's you could not even ride your bike to the restroom before the race without putting your helmet on.

    Velo Cult:it's hard to believe that 2003 still had no helmets.
    The UCI made helmet use mandatory in all UCI sanctioned races on May 5, 2003 following the death by accident of Andrei Kivilev in the Paris-Nice race: TdF is not a UCI sanctioned race, but TdF organizers observe the UCI requirement with regards to helmets, with the following modification:

    At their own risk, cyclists may remove their helmets during the final climb to the summit if the climb is at least 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) long. A Tour course marker designates the point on the course where cyclists can remove their helmets. Removal of helmets on mountain stages is never allowed before the start of a climb.

    Now you've gone and made me melancholic...
    Good times! And you're right about the lack of characters these days.
    We were one of the few places that sold the Mountain Bike Action back then in Germany. Every month when the latest issue came in we were crowded to the brim. Every bike geek in town had to read up on the latest parts and escapades of our heroes. We also ordered a lot of stuff from ads in that magazine. Back then, pre-internet, that was still an adventure. I was usually the one who had to call over here and get info and place the orders...

    Here's my personal hero from back then. Wish I had half as much control over my Zaskar as Hans "no way" Rey has.

    That beach picture reminded me of the annual mountain bike festival at Lake Garda in Northern Italy. Our store would always close for two days and we'd make a long weekend of it. Great cycling, on and off road, excellent food and wine and like-minded people from all over Europe. Good times.
    Most of the mountain biking is on old supply and military trails and some trails are right on the edge, high above the lake. Here are some samples (not my pics but I did most of those trails).

    yeah, i've been following that story from the get go. i find it hilarious and not very shocking. from years of racing the same races with her you always knew she was a little screwed in the head. not that great of a rider either. very inconstant. she was however one of the great personalities of mountain biking when the sport was in it's renaissance.
