    Superbowl Ride - Sunday 2/7 at 2:00PM

First of all, this specifically designed ride has nothing to do with Super Bowl at all -- it just coincides with the time when the game is on as the streets are largely empty at this time, which I really like. Riding at this time also is a preemptive strike against the risk of getting stuck in front of a television set eating all day.

So -- I will go riding during the Super Bowl and invite all similarly inclined to join me. It will be a largely flat and slow-ish (~12mph rolling average - slow enough to chit-chat; all riders on all kinds of bikes welcome) ride, 30 miles maximum, mostly just around the urban Uptown mesa. We will start at Velo Cult at 2:00 PM, and meander ourselves through neighborhoods such as South Park, North Park, Normal Hghts, Kensington, University Hghts, Hillcrest, Mission Hills, Banker's Hill, Park West and possibly a quick jaunt downtown. We may make a quick stop for a cuppa or a snack -- in the spirit of the ride somewhere without a TV screen -- if people so prefer.

    Come join me!

    I plan to go.

Sounds like a great idea! I'm neither a football or hockey fan but when I discovered that most streets are traffic free during the games. I support and cheer for them. So I can ride in peace. Yeah! I might bring the family if my wife decides not to watch the game.

Bike Polo: 2pm on Sundays at Adams Ave Park (35th and Adams)

You can check the blog I've been doing: sdbikepolo.wordpress.com (it's also in the polo thread) I won't actually be playing this weekend but I'm nearly certain that it will be happening. I will keep you updated if you are interested in stopping by.

    Thanks for the plug William!

This is a great idea! I support the idea of staying as far away from a TV screen as humanly possible. I'll try and make it.

Well, sorry to rain on the parade a bit...especially after William's advertisement...but it looks like polo will be a small crowd on Sunday if it happens at all. A few people showed interest but I'm not sure if there will be enough for a game.

Just wanted to give you a heads-up.

My other ride got canceled, so I may violate my "don't drive to the ride" rule and do this instead.

Hillbilly, that might be really good, actually; people who haven't played before might be more willing to at least pick up a mallet and practice a little if the crowd (and the corresponding potential for embarrassment) is smaller.:face-smile:

Just a reminder that this ride is happening tomorrow, Sunday at 2:00 from the bike shop. Weather is supposed to be getting drier, with Sunday being mostly clear. If you ride with a Brooks, bring a plastic bag just in case.

The ride will be a true ramble, where we will simply meander through the Uptown mesa, focusing on the quiet neighborhoods around its edges and with the occasional surprise valley view. There will be no destination except for the ride itself. Low-30s miles; 10mph average conversational speeds. Quick coffee stop if people want to.

For myself, I will be bringing my new GPS with a planned route and intend to visit off the beaten track neighborhoods at the northern edge of the mesa, notably in Mission Hills, that I have never been to before. Should be fun.

This sounds more fun than the game this year. Count me in!
  7.
It also sounds like one of the many rides I've already done around here, which was a lot of fun. I've gone on rides locally just exploring the roads. One such ride took me only to Kensington, looking for access to the adjacent canyons. It helps to just do that sometimes to find your way around.

I may just take AmTrack down and ride to the shop. How long do you expect the ride to last?

Well, 32 miles at 9-11mph avg. suggests some 3.5 hrs, not incl. any stops or breaks. So let's say an even 4 hrs.

Good thing is - as we are making essentially one large circle around the bike shop, you can peel off whenever it suits you - at no time during the ride should we be more than half an hour (at a good clip) from the Old Town or Santa Fe depots.

Right now, the radar shows no measurable precipitation anywhere to the west of us, so things are looking good.

Click on my user name above for my cell phone number if you need to contact me immediately before or during the ride.
  9.
I think I'll do the car thing to get there to not be rushed. The car misses me anyway.
  10.
Very Cool! I do not watch other people exercise. (My definition of football is, "Sixty million people who need exercise watching 22 people who don't.") I had planned to do some serious ivy trimming. But if I get lazy, I will join you folks.

yeah, and in addition to that it also just happens to be a mass exercise in group think, conformity, mob hysteria, product identification, good ole "bread and circuses" diversion, an inculcation of rigid masculine identities, template for the militaristic model of "us and them", dress rehearsal for "ra! ra!" jingoism, and training for the team ethos of the capitalist workplace, all wrapped into one cuddly little bundle generating billions of dollars for corporate America.

Sort of like why I don't have ad covered cycling gear. And to show how deep it can get, I saw an instruction sheet for the emergency procedures for an airplane. One of the shoes on the people represented had a nike swoosh on it! Honestly, must we see that just before the plane crashes!

Thanks to all who showed up for the ride today - wonderful company! We cut the planned route short by about 5 miles to make it back to the shop before it got pitch dark: 28.3 miles - here's the GPS tracklog (blue line).

Ran into member James P Griffin on W Washington on my way home - haven't seen him in a long time.

    Next weekend - farm ride!

Thanks for the picturesque ride, Sigurd! Now I really want to achieve in life so I can move out of the ghetto and get me a posh house in a quiet neighborhood.

Nice photo. Cars were actually parked! We stayed local in Carslbad and it was nice to enjoy the sunny weather with few cars on the road.
We rode the electric-Xtracycle (with my son, and two big garbage bags) to the recycling station to return plastic bottles for dough.
