    The Norma Jean Bikers

When: Every last Wednesday of the month
    Time: 7:30 PM
Where: To be determined (watch this thread for details)

The Norma Jean Bikers will do short rides around town with other friendly, encouraging women. The rides are open to all newbies, experienced riders and everyone else in between.

The rides will be recession friendly. Destinations will include coffee shops, cheap (under $10) or free concerts, tea at someone's home, or a late evening picnic at a neighborhood park.

Distance will be short and pace of riding will be slow (8 mph). Slower if necessary. We will walk up hills if need be.

Any and all bikes are welcome.

Next ride is February 24, 2010.

Yay for Beany for organizing this. I'm leaving 2/24 for the UK, but will be back for the March ride. I figure if I bring my bike to work on the rack, I can try to jet there directly from work. Look forward to doing this ride in March.

Unfortunately 2/24 is Robin's birthday so I won't be able to attend. I don't think I can leave him to do the heavy lifting on his birthday! I'm fairly sure I'll be in for March. Can't necessarily plan that far ahead, but my intention is there.

    Thanks Beany!

For the February Norma Jean Biker Ride, the destination is Twiggs Coffee shop. For a starting location does meeting at the North Park Library Branch work for you all?

Start time: 7:30 PM. Minimal hills on the ride.

Edit: All you ladies who are local to the North Park/South Park/Downtown area, we could pick you up via a bike bus prior to the ride. Just whisper your location to me.

Apparently calling this a women's monthly ride is raising issues (including legal ones) and many questions.

Are men welcome? At what point are they welcome? Will the men folk be turned away if they show up? Are 5 year boys welcome to accompany their moms? Can men accompany their very pregnant mates?

    My response: Use your judgment.

I did start the thread and propose today's ride, but I am by no means the leader. If you have questions, post it here and hopefully someone will respond.

are you kidding me? legal issues with a group of women getting together to ride their bikes???

maybe i shouldn't give my opinion since i don't do the ride(i don't like riding at night). but i'd be interested in a women's ride that was on saturdays as an alternative or in addition to the downtownies ride. and yes, i'd expect it to be women only. nothing against the guys or kids, but that's what the other rides are for. sometimes ya just want to hang out with the girls.

I had a good time last night with pinkhairedcyn. We meandered all over the place and checked out the many views of Mission Valley (it looks kinda magical at night). At Twiggs, we had our own private musical entertainment. We were sitting outside people watching and chatting and some guy wanted to practice his bugle. He was actually really good (I was mentally prepared for some godawful tooting). Then we had some random people stop by and sing across the street. It was a perfect night. University Heights is its own little town.

    ---

I am not opposed to moving the ride to a late afternoon on a Sunday. Perhaps starting at 4PM or so. A few women have emailed me asking for it to be rescheduled and I don't recall why the midweek time and date was originally decided. I'm always exhausted during the week so I'm happy to move it to a Sunday afternoon (I like having one day to myself where I don't have to be "on").

Sunday's are tough because the Down Townies already have that day. personally i like the time that it goes off right now. Melodee would have gone if she wasn't in Big Bear. evening rides open up so many opportunities for dinner, coffee, and quiet back streets in the old neighborhoods. some people may have night vision problems but i think it works great.

The ride was super fun! University Heights is all twinkly and pretty at night. And the bugle guy had a really fantastic bowler hat on, as well.

I'd be down for riding either Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

I was hoping to be able to go on the ride, but it was the same night as the Bike Coalition board meeting.
there shouldn't be any issues with a woman-only ride (legal or otherwise). There's lots of 'women only' events and businesses. so long as you aren't taking government funding to run the ride, you're fine.
I like guys, and they're fun, but sometimes it's good to have a girls night out on the bikes. :-)

Oh my goodness. 2 weeks off the board and we get all serious! I figure since there is a "co-ed" ride (I love my Downtownies rides), there shouldn't be any reason that the XX chromosomes can't have an evening to themselves. I don't normally do "women only" things, but I'm willing to give it a whirl. If I find it too much estrogen (like my office at times), then I don't go. But it sounds like fun and so far the group of ladies that I've met have been super. Not the often found "ritualized complaining" that some females can get into and it's not turned into a "yummy mummy" support group (breast feeding tips & discussing which diapers are the best value). (Those are just my hang-ups and things I can't relate too.)

I've not done any of the women's rides, so I'm not sure of what sort of vibe so don't know what to suggest yet. Would like to get a feel for what it's all about.

Meeting Place: Filter on 30th and Polk.

The vibe? I don't know how to answer that. I would say it is not annoying. Cheap and/or free is what I'm hoping for.

A survey asking women what we should be doing to help more women ride more. There's a lot of discussion about the fact that advocates, cities, planners, etc want more women to bike, but no one really knows what it would take to get more women on bikes. Please take about 10-15 minutes to fill it out, and feel free to share it with your women friends! Thanks in advance.

I now know I won't be able to do these rides as we've added Wednesdays as another surgery day (used to just be Tues & Thurs). So those are very long days and I know I won't make it.

Ladies: Someone needs to pipe up with a destination idea. If you leave it up to me, I'll recommend riding to a coffee shop to read a book in silence. Which is not how one socializes...unless everyone here is a bookworm too.

    Hi all,

My name is Sherry, I am new to sdbikecommuter.com and NJB and I totally love it! I just purchased a lovely 1973 Womens Raleigh Sports bike in mind to commute to work and get out and ride more. I would love to join you all on the next ride 3/24 and meet everyone....sounds like a great group of gals.

Did you all decide on a place for this Wednesday?

    Hi Sherry,

    Welcome to the forums!

It looks like no one piped in so we'll do what I suggested, meet at at Filter on 30th and Polk and ride around ending at the Whistle Stop to see Brenda Xu play. I know a few ladies are out of town, some have to work late, some already had plans. So it may be teeny peloton tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow. If Wed is too inconvenient of a day, I'm happy to move it to another week night.

I am very interested to participate in the April ride. It seems I just missed the March one. Even though apparently not that many people showed. Beany, playing bike polo is awesome. I've tried to watch some people play near Adams Avenue, but every time I'm either too early or late. My boyfriend, friends & I organised our own game. I highly recommend playing. It is challenging at first (at least for me), but a lot of fun.

Kailah: I'm a little apprehensive about playing since I've managed to make it thus far without ever broken any bone. But bike polo does look like a lot of fun. Maybe we could do an April ride to watch bike polo? Or join in if other riders are so inclined.

A little thing as a broken bone isn't enough to keep a rock star like you off your bike!
