Regals are pretty, but I don't use leather or else I'd have gotten one. Tried the vinyl Regal knockoff from Soma (Okami or whatever its called), even gave it 150 mi to break in, and it was a total assmangler. Too bad most higher-end offerings in Lorica are busy team editions. . The search continues.
whats up dude...i was reading your blog and saw that you stop by Java Jones every now and then...no i know where i've seen you before...say whats up the next time ya cruise in
I recently moved to San Diego from Philly and began riding my very short commute to work today. The distance is about 3 miles one way and it begins in North Park and ends in Banker's Hill. I started a blog to blather on about biking and there are no posts yet: http://bicyclingsd.blogspot.com/
Thanks! I think I'm riding with some women bikers this sunday, but will try the breakfast townie ride the following weekend and will bring my husband along too (his bike is above mine on the rack)
My name's Andy, I'm car free in Vista, previously car free in Mira Mesa, both awful places for it. I commute to Escondido City Hall along Santa Fe, taking the train when I feel lazy. I'm a bicycle advocate and work for the planning department in Escondido, trying to get them to offer incentives to cyclists and transit users. On the weekends I love taking the metrolink up to LA and doing the MR thing. This is me doing the Roadie thing.
And this is a bad picture of my bikes and the squalor in which I live.
Welcome Andy, I got a friend in Portland that works with the bicycle advocacy group up there I'll see if I could get you two talking on getting SD county bike friendlier
My bike is a classic black Bianchi Milano--affectionately known as the work horse. I have bike lust big time and need to, want to, start riding more often. Been out of the habit of late. My commute is non-existent as I work from home. I do use the work horse for grocery shopping, bank, errands, etc. so I guess that counts. Bike dates are nice, too :)

Steven, good to put a face to a name now!
Andy and SSO, welcome! SSO, pretty cool story about the travels you've been on!
My name is Mark. My wife & I have two children & we have been very interested in cycling for about a year now. My wife commutes on her LHT to the office & I stay home with my daughters & try to do as much as I can on a Big Dummy. We're new to S. California & though we are rather stranded in the suburbs of Rancho Bernardo we have manifested a distaste for our mini van & 'average' automobile use & like consider ourselves advocates for more bicycling for life solutions & liesure.
Hi, I am Sigurd. Here's a photo from the Allen Trail, between Allen Rd. in Mission Hills and Mission Valley (Hotel Circle S):
I have ridden bikes since I was a young child, and my current ride is a giant behemoth beast of a Cannondale touring bike from 1990. My son Nikolai - who also attended today's "townie" ride - is 17 and rides a Schwinn Traveler anno circa 1985: As you no doubt have gathered, we are more into the enjoyment of riding a bike than the minutiae of the bike itself! Nikolai is a high school senior and wants to study city planning - hopefully he will learn from riding how to improve urban infrastructures to ease the use of bicycles as every-day means of transportation.
I grew up in Norway and love skiing, but have lived in Pacific Beach for 26 years. I really enjoyed the "Copenhagen" thread on this board, as I lived there for several years - a very nice city with incredible bicycling!
I am also into genealogy, and chose my user name - Njord Noatun - because he is the farthest back I have been able to trace my ancestors: I have used this user name on various message boards for years as I figure it is simpler and more transparent to stay with one name.
Some of my other interests include vintage stereos and listening to vinyl.
Hey everybody! My name's Mike...I live in Golden Hill right now, just a short ride from VeloCult. I've been in SD for about 3 years, by way of Bloomington, Indiana (probably one of the best bike cities in the midwest...check out the movie "Breaking Away" if you haven't seen it).
I've been having a great time on this board, reading about some really cool bikes, routes, and events. I'm glad to be part of the community now. Here's me:
After a couple of years in SD with my '99 mountain bike, I decided to upgrade to a NEW Trek 1.5 double (18-speed). I commute as often as I can from Golden Hill to Sorrento Valley, usually by heading to the train station and taking the Coaster 2 stops. Commuting with the road bike is like night and day compared to the mountain bike, I'm really enjoying it. Here's a stock photo of my new bike:
For the men, it's 200 laps (women=100), and teams of 4. You have to do a minimum of 10 exchanges, but what usually happens is the "anchor" of your team takes the majority of the laps. The race itself is a ton of fun, but the whole week leading up to it is a huge party.
I got to Bloomington in 2000, and there was no longer a Paliai's. It's now a burger place called Opie Taylor's. The best pizza in Bloomington (now) is a placed called Rockits.
Hey Folks, my name is Tony and I want to start by saying that this site is fantastic. This is what this City needs! I live in La Jolla and commute to Point Loma almost daily and split the saddle time between an old Univega fixed and an Atala 7-speed. I'm looking forward to getting more into the site.
I'm lawrence. I live in south park, work up at UCSD. Most days I bike to hilcrest and take a shuttle from there, some days I ride the whole thing. I'm a big proponent of getting around town on a bike, admittedly mostly because I enjoy it. In addition to cruising around town, I race a bit of cyclocross (poorly), and love mountain biking---basically I like riding in any form.
Here's my cyclocross ride, which I also use for longer commutes:
And here's the bike I get around town on:
They're both great bikes -- the lemond is an 06, the bianchi probably mid-80s (anyone know?), both steel frames. Anyway, looking forward to sharing some routes and tips with everyone.
Hi, I'm David. I live in South Park, right behind Velo Cult. I've known Sky and the crew for a while (what is it, more than two years now?)
Currently, I ride to work twice a week by bike. I'd ride every day if I could, but I work off the 56 and it's ~32 miles one way, and I'm not that strong (yet). So, I ride in, and take the train back. Now that the time has switched, I'll be training in and riding home now, which means Torrey Pines and Mt. Soledad. My next goal is commuting 3x a week, then incorporating round-trips.
I use my roadie, the OCR Composite Limited, It's a sport touring bike - tall head tube, long wheelbase, room for 32c tires or smaller ones with fenders, long reach brakes. It's beefy and SUPER comfortable. Quite a bit tougher and more versatile than you'd expect for a carbon bike.
The backpack is an Ortlieb Flight, and it's amazing. It's built on a suspension mesh frame like most heavy duty hiking packs, so it ventilates well. The waist strap supports most of the weight, so it's comfortable even when loaded. It's the next best thing to Panniers I've found.
Hey ya'll. My name is Gabriel, and here are my main rides. 1980's Guerciotti, 1988 Fausto Coppi track bike. I don't have a car and do all my errands by bike. I also do longer 50 miles + rides on the weekends. I'm working on building up something that I can throw around and load stuff up on. Stay tuned....I work at Grants Marketplace in South Park. If you are in the neighborhood drop by with your bike and say hi. paz
Hi, My name is Roberto, i'm originally from TJ but living in the North Park/University Heights area for the past 6 years and been commuting ever since. I do a short run in the mornings from University heights to Bankers Hill near Downtown to work. Here's some pictures of my only bike right now, I just finished restoring this 198(7)? Torpado "Alfa" (new paint, decals & components) which i use for this short & sweet ride, cheers!.
As for the paint, I sanded the frame down to the bone, primed it and then applied many layers of your regular spray can paint & clear coat, it took me a while to finish but enjoyed the process, then ofcourse the components single speed it and decals (cyclomondo store-ebay), looking forward for my next project, probably a Peugeot 10 speed.
Hello, some random dude gave me a card to this forum... so hi! Name is Hyoki but I go by Max because everyone butchers my real name. Korean by birth, did five questionable years in the NAVY, and now working as FRCSW's bitch (aka contractor) on Coronado.
Bit about my bicycling history. Last August, on a impulse went to buy a bike at REI, Novara Bonanza. Went to a job in Point Mugu and went off-roading with some hardcore SS 29'ers and crashed it real bad (derailleur took a direct hit and went into spokes, locked it up. bike and I went off cliff together) . Took it back to REI (100% Satisfaction baby) and replaced it for a Novara Ponderosa, which you see here. Gas price was going retarded and my car is a pos (95 eclipse gsx turbo blah gas hog blah) so I picked up my bike and started commuting. That was September. After riding the bike you see here for 6 months ~2500 miles, I felt I needed a dedicated road bike but didn't want to spend $500 on a so-so multispeed road bike. I purchased this fixie on eBay for mere $250. Today was my first day really commuting with it and I can't count in both hands how many times I almost crashed. And it definitely was fast but also very tough up the hill..
Oh yea, I commute from Clairemont by Keils, to Downtown everyday. Every Sunday morning me and my buddies go to different mountain bike trails, my favorite being Mission Trails. I also build high-powered (600-900lumens) led headlights for sub $100 based off the ssc p7 led, I started this because I didn't want to pay $400 for a 400lumen bike light. I wanted something to blind cars with..... hehe.
If you see me on the ferry, please do say hi. I do not bite.
