Howdy William, yep there are a few of us commuters out here in the Far East. I live near Willow Glen and Jamacha so I ride up Jamacha Rd a bit and hang a left on Jamacha Blvd to head into Spring Valley. I used to leave at a more gentlemanly hour, but these days I'm rolling out the door by about 6:10. I have seen one gentleman riding up Jamacha in the morning a couple times; he had a verrrry large backpack and appeared to be on the way to work. Is that you? I'm not even sure how I found the board. Probably a Google search. I bookmarked it some time ago but came back to it recently and explored the forums a little more.

Anyway, thanks for the welcome and pedal on fellow Rancho resident!

Hello, im Jeff, aka El Capitan. I have been commuting by bike for 5 years now, my commute has changed numerous times, from Point loma to down town, down town to PB, City Heights to Ocean Beach and now its only three blocks, i am a little bummed, but it gives me more time for other riding besides the daily commute, so i am pretty stoked at the same time. I have a few bikes, I started on my late 80s early 90s Specialized Rock Hopper, then moved to my early 80s raleigh super cross, started working for a bike shop and bought a GT peace 9er, road that for about a year and a half and sold it, built up a surly long haul, toured the coast with one of my best friends for a month, built up a Volkscycle SS when i returned, and now i am slowly piecing together a surly cross check that i plan on doing CX and commuting on. Oh an my long haul has a freeloader adapter on the rear. One of the few xtras in SD.

Welcome Jeff! If your commute is too short, you can always extend it by adding a few aimless miles to it. I just began doing it today and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Sweet Surly. Maybe you can help Velo Cult haul around beer kegs to add on extra miles http://www.velocult.com/index.php/blog/post/hauling_two_kegs_with_a_bicycle/ .

Haha, i saw that, my friend did that on his xtra the other day, but he only has one keg! And i deffinatly add a few aimless miles into my commute Beany, but its more of going out for a ride before work, seeing as how I live about 3 blocks from the shop!

Hey all, I live in University Heights. I work from home (and various cafes) so I don't actually have a commute, but I do a faux commute out to the co-op in OB, then downtown then back to UH. Sometimes I go around the other way out to 30th then downtown and back up.

The Ride the City tool is very cool! MUCH better than the outdated PDF I have with bike routes.

Any riding is good riding, faux or not! We'll be doing the South Park to People's Co-op ride this Sunday at 9am if you want to ride there in company. Check out the Downtownies thread if you're interested.

Hello everybody! I can't believe I've been riding and commuting here for years and only now found this forum. I live in South Carlsbad and work up on Torrey Pines. Door to door it's 18 miles of the best commute in the world. Now that it gets dark so soon I usually take the car to Swami's and ride in and out from there. Costs me a couple of miles but riding up Manchester after dark is just too much excitement for me. Here's a pic from the 2007 Tour de Poway. Don't have a more recent shot I like.

Hello, my name is Kevin and I have a biking problem.

I commute on my 07 Specialized Allez Comp 4 to 5 days a week. I live in Rancho San Diego, and commute to downtown where I work at Montbleau and Associates as a Green building guru.
The ride into work is aprox 13 miles, and I usually strech the ride home to 18 to 20 miles depending on my route.
I am a mountain biker at heart with a road biking habit. Wednesday nights, and the weekends I am offroad on my Chumba XCL.
Mon, Tues, Thur and Fri are commute days.
I started commuting late September, and will have my first 1,000 miles under my belt by December 1st, I haven't decided how to celebrate this yet (suggestions welcome), but it feels like a big accomplishment to me.

    Hi everyone

I'm Mike, and I'm a former mountain biker from the Midwest who hasn't touched a bike since moving to CA 6 years ago :face-crying:

I'm planning on finding a new-ish bike and changing my commute routine to include biking. Right now I take the Coaster from North County to Sorrento Valley or Old Town (depending on where I am working that week) and would love to find a way to bike from the Coaster stations to work.

I stumbled on this website by using The Google... glad to be here :face-smile:

I don't have any pics of my yet-to-be-found ride, but I do have a pic of my son biting my nose:

Hey Bev, Nice to meet another Easty County-ite

I start at Jamacha /94 - take Jamacha to Calavo to Del Rio to Campo rd (thru casa de oro) to Broadway (under the 125 / 94 interchange) to Lemon Grove ave. - That turns into imperial, I will turn right on 69th and to Akins and it shadows imperial but you skip all the stop lights, and Akins turns into market, (this avoids the Euclid 4-lane change to turn left on Market) I take market to Raven and there I am at work.

I reverse that going home, but at the Campo rd - Del Rio - Avocado interchange, i will go over the 94 on avocado, turn right on fury, turn left on Weighorst, Right on Calle ALbara, to Jamacha, to Hillsdale, to Willowglen, back to Jamacha, and home to a shower and recovery drink. . . Ride home is my favorite, great stress release and a couple good climbs on the way.

It was a welcome surprise the other night when on my way home I met up with 2 others heading my way at a stop light. We stuck together for most of the way, each of us splitting off at our appropriate locations. Made the commute go so much quicker when you have someone to talk with. . . .

Your route seems to be very similar if not the exact way the others get into downtown. I still haven't worked up the nerve to ride through the ghetto yet (I'm not very fast), but someday...

I never did post a picture of my bike. I finally got a phone with a camera, so here's my daily commuter, which I purchased at V.C. almost two years ago, when it was at Bird Rock:

I just got around to installing the suspension stem this weekend. I've been meaning to do it for a long time. I've also got Cinelli Lux tape on the bars, which is highly reflective. I tried to take some night shots with flash to make that show but I couldn't get the camera to focus. I normally only use the panniers on Monday morning and Friday evening to schlep the weeks work clothes to/from work.

It's a cheap steel touring bike. I think it was made in the late '80's or early '90's. It's kind of heavy, even without the bags and rack, it's probably near 30 lbs.

Edit, I got a flash pic, but in my office. The flash makes the reflectors really glow.

Hey everyone, I just signed up recently...and we sold my wife's car even more recently. She has my car and I am commuting full time now. It's not quite the long routes that a lot of you have but I'm riding from North Park to downtown, coastering up to Carlsbad and riding ~5 miles up there...then back. I'm pretty psyched about it though.

I've been riding for about 10 years, moved out here from DC about a year ago, and am trying to get Bike Polo started in SD.

Hi, I've been "commuting" for about a year now, (it's in "" because I really only live about 2 or less from my workplace) and I ride from my apartment (32nd & Harbour) to North Park/ South Park/ Velo Cult via 30th St. once a week or so. I also ride to rosecrans at least once a week just riding that loverly bike path up the coast (though I'm not really a big fan of being off road).

I'm otherwise fairly new to the biking community, though everyone I've met is pretty cool. I went full-time cycler when my car broke down, and just never felt like fiking it, this is a lot more fun and heck of a lot cooler anyway!

I'll post some pictures as soon as I get on from my own computer. I think I should probably get one of me on my bike anyhow.

My commute is pretty short and boring too (3 miles one way). I ride through some really pretty areas, but the distance is teeny (N.Park to Banker's Hill). I redeem that by riding slightly longish rides on the weekends.

nice, i love the high Sierra's. is that Glacier Lake off of the mountaineers route?

commute length doesn't mean much. i try to tell people not to get hung up on the commuting to work thing. using their bikes for daily chores is something i like to see and if you can turn that into commuting to work than even better. some people only thing of commuting as the going to work thing and not everybody can do that. with some folks thats the end of the conversation. they don't even think about the farmers market, coffee shops, video shops, etc.

I think that was Consultation Lake off the western Mt. W route, it was a little before the 99 switchbacks.

I see what you're saying too. I hardly have any commute to work but I ride for at least 20 minutes to go anywhere else. I like the ride though, I'll be moving a little bit further away from my job soon-ish so I'm looking forward to more time on the road.

I just had the guys at VC do a tune up for me and they changed out the chain, since then it's been shifting ten times better, thanks guys. I'd really like to do a major overhaul on it and just clean everything out, replace as necessary and re-grease everything. However, I only have the one bike and no real workspace so that could get a little awkward. We'll see how it goes.

The other things I want to do is replace the handlebars, change out anything that's rusted (there's quite a bit), and get a new saddle, I'll probably start with that one. I really need to replace my tires, the ones I have on are only tires in the sense that they were once made of rubber.

I live with my wife and step son in Carlsbad. I work from home and visit biotech labs in the Torrey Pines, Sorrento Valley, and UTC area. So my commute varies from 22 to 35 miles one way. I drive (the company car) when visiting multiple labs to repair/maintain lab-robotics equipment (e.g. robot1, robot2). I ride my Xtracycle and/or Yamaha Scooter at least once a week when I don't need to bring the laptop, toolbox, and spare parts. My wife drives a Prius.

I moved to San Diego in 2004 from Toronto. I have been commuting by bike since 1993; I rode in all 4 seasons even in the snow packed winter on a lugged steel road bike (I still have it). Yep! 700x28C high psi tires are surprisingly more stable in packed snow and ice. It was more convenient for me to ride the bike to the light rail and subway station.

Some of my favorite sites: Momentum: Magazine for Self-Propelled People, Streetsfilms, Streetsblog, Graham Watson for Race Updates
Some of my favorite books: Critical Mass, Car Sick, How to Live Well Without Owning a Car, CARtoons, Divorce Your Car
Some of my favorite cycle vids: 3 Major Tours (France, Italy, and Spain), Share The Road, We Are Traffic!, Return of the Scorcher.

My fleet (not including my wife and son's bikes):
2 Xtracycles (One is Electrified!) Take the kid to school, do an errand, stop by the farmers market, to the beach....
    Brompton (from CleverCycles in PDX)
Giant Halfway (got this old one from Craigslist)
    Bike Friday Pocket Rocket (previously)
    Bike Friday Pocket Llama (previously)
    Bike Friday Tandem XL
