Hi All, I'm Jeff. I just moved to San Diego from Portland, OR to pursue my acting career. I'm staying in Point Loma and trying to find a day-job at the moment. Once that's settled I'll be commuting via train to Los Angeles with my bike on my shoulder.

I've been riding around a lot and I'm loving the weather here, but not the roads so much. Finding this community is a boon.

Below is my Fuji America that I'm restoring. I also have a Bianchi hybrid for the rain... doesn't seem to happen very often, though.

And then another PCH ride on 1/23 (next time I will make sure to point you in the direction of Sorrento Valley next time before it is "too late"! Hi.

My name is Alan & I have accepted a job in San Diego starting in August. I'm presently finishing up my college degree in Pittsburgh. I don't intend to have a car and am scoping out what biking is like in San Diego.

Looks like the weather will be pretty cooperative with biking all the time. Today, at home in Milwaukee, the high was 8 degrees F.

One of my goals is to never be one of those scary SoCal people who wear a winter coat when it's 60 degrees out.

It got up to 80°F yesterday, today should be 75°F :face-devil-grin: . Busting out the parka at 60°? That's waiting too long; anything under 65° warrants coverage. Brrrrrrrrr.

What part of town will you be working?

    And welcome!

    Welcome Alan!

I am sure you will enjoy your new life here with riding weather almost every day of the year.

I too moved here from a country with real seasons and snow and ice in winter so your words sound very familiar. But trust me, it does not take very long to turn into a weather wimp and don the fleece in weather that back in (insert frozen tundra location here) would have been good enough for shorts and a t-shirt.
  3.
I've worn short sleeve and shorts in 32F and didn't feel too cold. A big part of that is humidity, there is more of it here.

Hi Alan and let me yet another voice extending a warm welcome to you. I've been in San Diego for a little over a year now (moved here from Philly), car free and still not at all sick of the weather here. However, I have adapted and complained loudly when the weather got to 60 degrees. I still however wear sandals when out and about.

Milwaukee was one of the many cities I wanted to move to from Philadelphia - hear so many good things about the biking possibilities and the walkable communities. I'd love to hear you talk about it when you get here.

Re: the car free-ness - I find it easy to do without it because of the weather. No excuse to not ride because the weather is crappy. Last weekend I think my husband and I hauled more groceries than most of the shoppers who drove to the co-op.

well my name is mike, i just found this site through an ad on CL for the ride on sunday the 10th. can't really call my self a bike commuter, it's been about 10 years since i owned a bike. since i don't have a job i really don't have a commute, but the wife and i wanted to get rid of some monthly expenses. our 2nd car hardly gets used and the insurance on it is cheap, but pointless. so i decided i'd start riding a bicycle if i needed to go somewhere. found a specialized rockhopper mtn bike on CL cheap so i bought it. i used to mtn bike a lot so i figured i'd just ride it to the store if i needed to. then we got my wife a mtn bike so we could go mtn biking. after my first 20 mile road ride on the mtn bike i decided the mtn bike wasn't gonna work for that with the tires it has on it. talked my dad into giving me his old 80's peugeot 10 speed for christmas, but instead he gave me his beater pos 1970 all pro kmart 10 speed. thanks dad... well the all pro was his first road bike, my mom bought it for him in 1970 for christmas. so there is sentimental value, but not much other value. here are pics of my road bike, mtn bike and (don't hate me) my motorized bike. i only have the motorized bike for when i go surfing/bodyboarding. too much to ride 15 miles to ob, surf all day then ride the 15miles back home. well if it was all flat coming home i could probably do it, but i gotta ride up to sdsu area and that hill with 15+ lbs of stuff after 6 hours of paddling around is just too much for me.

i have asthma so i might be wheezing as i walk up the hills too, but we'll see.
usually i make it up hills, i can just hear my dad's voice telling me "you can rest on the downhill" i can't tell you how many times he told me that when i was younger. i always wanted to get off and walk up the hills cause "i'm tired"

i already changed up my sunday plans so i can make it. i'm just getting over being sick so i'm hoping i feel well enough to ride.

    Hello!

My name is Lucila. I met Sky during the Food, Inc. showing at Velo Cult about two months ago and have been lurking ever since.

I haven't owned a bicycle in about 25 years, and haven't ridden one in about the same amount of time.

I, like Mike, can't call myself a commuter, but Sky has started to put together two Xtra cycles for me and my husband, Robin. I don't know that I'll ever be able to commute to work, but I want to use the car less around town. We have two children and own our own business, so the work/commute thing can be challenging. But we are super excited to get our bikes! I can't wait to start riding the bikes to the zoo or across the bay to Coronado, to grocery shop and to hit the Farmer's Markets. Honestly, I just want to get on the bike and go. :face-smile:

    Hi everyone,

I introduced myself briefly a couple pages ago. Since then I've been able to get my hands on my first "nice" road bike, which I've been putting to good use lately, riding out to the 101 and down into Cardiff. I'll be returning to work on Monday after an extended holiday break and will be commuting with my new wheels. I'll be riding from home to the Encinitas coaster station, then from Old Town station to work. I think it will be about 14 miles a day all together, so I'll probably start by doing 2 or 3 days a week at first, then a long ride on weekends. Speaking of long rides, I might be able to make the Jan 10 ride.... I'll look around at other threads for info, but in case I don't find it, can someone point me to the time/place/distance?

Here's me on the left with my family:
    family

    and here's the wheels:

So nice to find a local group of riders!

Xtracycle is out of stock on those for at least 4 months. BoBike's products are solid and Xtracycle actually recommended we went that route.

    Thanks for the welcomes, y'all.

Bev: Looks like I'll be in the Sorrento Valley.

I'm looking at places to live, and want somewhere bike and pedestrian friendly and with reasonable cultural and recreational opportunities nearby, as well as within 17 miles or so of Sorrento Valley. It'd also be nice to be within a few miles of a station for the Coaster train, which looks like a backup option. I'm eyeballing Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and some of the neighborhoods near like North Park and University Heights. Any thoughts?

Beany: Milwaukee seems a decent city for biking and pedestrianism, though my experiences are colored by growing up in a streetcar suburb (historically, at least, as our foresighted ancestors ripped those all out) where most folks still drive everywhere despite walkability. Most kids still walked to school, though. You'd have to be ready to deal with hot and cold weather (which is perfectly doable) and a bus system that's been treated like crap for the past who-even-knows-how-many years.

I'm back in Pittsburgh now and just took my mountain bike to ride in the fresh snow cover in one of the lovely urban parks. Slush is a little gross to ride in but perfectly manageable with a pair of fenders and a modicum of caution.
