ok, so now that i have one... i would like to use it as a sort of black box. for those that are using them, what do you think the most affective place to put them is... i understand that the higher the vantage point the better, but my head moves around a lot... what are your thoughts on front or back mounting? what would give me the best perspective/evidence in the event of a crash or craptastic drivers...? inquiring MUles would like to know :)

I have my Replay XD mounted on the side of my helmet, facing forward. I'd prefer to have it on top, center line but my helmet and the mount don't work that well together in that spot.

Ideally you have two cams or one that shoots both front and back but if that is not an option I'd say catching your normal field of view is best. Most of those cams have a very nice wide field of view so the biggest problem is finding the best pitch angle. Took me a while to figure that out because I ride about equal time in the aerobars and in the hoods. My first couple of videos showed lots of sky or pavement...
I also prefer the helmet mount over handlebar because it films what I see and I figure that captures a lot of the interesting bits. Only a complete surprise hit from the rear would be missed and I hope I'll have enough air time in such an event to take at least a short glimpse of the offender. And the human head/neck do a pretty good job of compensating for bumps which makes the videos more enjoyable than those from handlebar mounted cameras, I think.

    Those are my 2 cents.

For anyone who's interested in the V.I.O. POV.HD, here's a 33% off coupon code ($200 off the $600 camera kit). I just ordered. The discount applied to the accessories that I added to the order as well as the camera.

I'm pretty sure I got in too late to get a coat, but I don't really need a coat anyway.

Anybody interested in buying a used ReplayXD 1080?

I'm revisiting the camera mount question in case there is something new to report. Helmet versus handlebar mount? And assuming a handlebar mount, anyone have a recommended mount?

DCRainmaker covers them extensively and he likes the K-Edge products. I know a few local riders who are using the Fly6 with success. I also saw this today:

The Fly6 is a great product. have the local SD people bought / received it recently? their ordering page looks like 'immediate' shipping http://fly6.com/shipping-returns/ but their kickstarter said US shipping wouldn't be till Fall 2014 (october). if they are rolling, I may just have to get one to protect myself on rides...

Not practical for commuting but still an interesting variation on personal video cameras.

Fly6 has now opened up their pre-order for the '2nd generation' of their rear flasher / HD camera:

    "Pre-order for $199 and save $50 (normally $249)"

The 'new' Fly6 is now the only model sold on their website (at $250) the first generation is no longer for sale but could probably found at other online retailers.

Another similar product now is the 'Black Box' for your bike, "Rideye" is much cheaper than Fly6, at only $140 for the cheapest potion.

As far as 'helmet cam' ... a GoPro Hero3+ is what I have on top of my helmet. It is lighter than the Sony Actioncam line, and I like the quality better (in HD 1080 you can make out license plates of the cars you pass / on the road) which is the point in case there is a crash. For rear I think I'll do the above Rideye or the Fly 6 sometime soon.

I just got a new helmet cam. The Replay XD that I had before was getting worse and worse in terms of battery life. When I inquired with Replay about having the battery replaced they told me they can't do that but would exchange the cam for $100. Sorry, I just can't support a $300 product that cannot be repaired/upgraded.

Found this GoPro knockoff for $60 and after testing for two weeks I am amazed. Image and sound quality is better than the Replay. I can see the image over wifi on my cell phone and even control it. And it has a removable battery! I bought a second one plus charger for an extra $15 and now I have enough juice for even very long rides. Two thumbs up!

Just got the latest Fly6 from Metro Cyclery. (REI sells it as well but it is nice to support the LBS). Watched some footages from a sunset and evening ride and I am very impressed. Battery life is rated for 6 hrs. Very easy controls. Now I have to get a YouTube account to upload videos.

If you have been thinking about getting the Fly12, take advantage of the Brexit-induced drop of the British Pound. $256 for the Fly 12 when you order from the UK at Merlin Cycles.

Thats too funny Batmick, I just noticed that price and ordered a Fly12 from them this am.
