    Rode up it for the first time today. Strava classifies Bonny Doon Rd. as a Cat 2 - pretty sure I haven't done too many Cat 2s, esp. not with a standard (42T) crankset.

    She handed me some serious whoopass for the second day running today, but I got some consolation from seeing this in the roadway halfway up (likely from ToC):



    Going up I was dropped like an armful of bricks by a guy riding a funny looking bicycle with 20" wheels: Looked like an over-sized folder! He was going too fast for me to make any inquiries about it.

    When I was 23 and thought I was strong and had a fast bike, I was doing the Scripps Ranch Old Pros 50 mile ride. Climbing up the old Pomerado Road (it was twisty back in 1987, before they straightened it out) I got passed like I was nothing by an old guy with white hair riding a tank of a bike and a big plastic milk crate on the rear rack and a yellow diamond sign that said "Pomeranian On Board", complete with a live pomeranian dog panting away in the milk crate from the July heat. I almost got off and threw my bike down the side of the hill.

    ...did not get passed by anyone on a funny looking bike, but did run into a flock of wild turkeys, and had to coax a few cows to get out of the way so I could pass...within sight of the SF skyline.

    Mark and Bill,

    Both your suggestions remind me about the bike in question. The rider passed me when I took the "Ouch" photo and I was never able to catch him after that. The dude looked superfit, in full team Spandex, in the drops, and did repeats on this challenging hill.

    I was thinking he rode some kind of dedicated climbing machine. One thing I noticed - the wheels looked bigger than the typical 20" folder wheel but smaller than a 24" MTB wheel - perhaps 22-23" or so (sort of like the wheels in Bill's picture)?

    Whatever it was - he rode it very well!

    Back in July and August 2010 I posted the first 14 bikes in my collection. Over spring break I worked my way to the back of the garage and hauled out a couple more. Here are 15, 16, and 17:

    Yeah, my "commute" in Monterey on Wednesday was pretty rad. Went from Naval Postgraduate School down to Cannery Row, and had breakfast in historic downtown Pacific Grove. When I move, this may be my daily route.


    Of course, the Brompton was the weapon of choice for this trek (Noel's cameo indicates her displeasure at being left behind. Jack surprisingly okay with it.). Didn't get to order the T-bag in time for the trip, due to most of the mail-order shops being out of stock. Next time, though. Rear rack handled the chore with ease.

    Can't give all the credit to the bike, though. The Coast Starlight got me a good portion of the way.

    This was my usual conversation starter with locals and travelers alike. Never heard a peep about "You can't bring that in here!" It was always "Awesome bike!" or "That's so cool!" Folks want to know more as soon as they see it.


    Seriously great bike infrastructure in the Monterey Bay area. Bike lanes, bike paths, bike signs (!), bike racks, bike-friendly businesses, and (most of all) TONS of people on bikes, even in the rain. Build it, and they'll use it.

    On or after a rainy day there are usually more debris on the side of the road. But if you decide to explore a path things could really get stuck in your wheels.

    This is probably the biggest and longest thing I have ever seen stuck between the wheels. Be careful where you thread.:face-devil-grin:

    This is the new "temporary" velodrome in Chicago. A new 250 meter UCI spec. indoor wooden track is planned for the ambitious "Chicago Velo Campus" to be built within the next few years. The idea of a central focal point for local cycling is gaining traction around the country. Rock Hill, South Carolina has finished its Schuermann 250 concrete outdoor track, the centerpiece of its "velo campus."

    Note that the stayers' line is wider than standard. Rule 2A reflects the UCI standard: "All lines on the track shall be of uniform width between 4 and 6 cm."

    Interesting to note that the San Diego Velodrome was also intended as a temporary track. The plans were to build a permanent 333.3 meter track where the city utility yard is on the southeast corner of Pershing Dr. and Florida Dr., out of the turbulent wind that rakes the top of the mesa on the site of the old Arizona St. landfill.

    I'd like to see a revival of those plans. We could use a "velo campus" of our own, with BMX track to add to the existing network of singletrack in Florida Canyon. Of course, this would mean tighter control by Parks & Recreation, which may be on the horizon already due to recent problems.

    It must be a plywood surface. Looking more closely at the photo, I can see the joints between the 4x8 sheets.

    The owner must have bailed the device out of impound and then convinced the City Attorney that it is not a pedicab, and therefore not bound by pedicab regulations. I hope it didn't cost her a small fortune, but I'll bet the City extorted a few hundred bucks from her.
