What the heck?? What a horrible place to put a kink (weak spot) in a frame. Wow.

Finished this lady up today. Minus the tires is completely original right down to the fenders, Ideal saddle, bell and tool pouch. Bertin.

    VC,

That Orange Bertin is a nice looking bike. It's got the swoopy frame that is similar to the Peugeot on the MixteGallery. You don't see that too often. I've got a few Mixte's in the garage I've been meaning to get to, and they all have the straight diagonal bars. I too like the "Wing Nuts" on the front wheel axle. I used to have an old Flandria with what I thought were brass or bronze "Wing Nuts" just like those. It might have been that the chrome plating had worn off. Cool look though,...I like it!

The fenders, lights, bell and rack on the rear are impressive. Often those things get beat up or removed on an older bike. (Does the rear rack attach to the rear fender?) It's missing the frame pump. From the looks of it, it might have interfered with the down tube shifters. Maybe not. The Ideal saddle is awesome and the tool pouch on the rear of the saddle...is that leather also?

The cranks on the Bertin seem long. Are they a standard 170mm? They look like cottered cranks. TA maybe? Would these be French thread?
Now that I think about it, the whole bike must have French Threads. There is posting on Lovely Bicycle about the building up of an older Motobecane Grand Touring, and she mentions that she had to file down a stem to get it to fit. I'm not sure if she was referring to the handlebar clamp or where the stem goes into the steerer tube. (It was a non French stem). Are French steerer tubes narrow?

I just found this web site, you may already know of it. http://bertinclassiccycles.wordpress.com/bicycle-models/ If you scroll down to the first image of a mixte, not only do the diagonal tubes swoop down to the seat tube, but they also bend from the seat tube to the rear drop out. Wow!

That's a really nice looking old Frenchy! Well done. Maybe that should be on the Bike Porn thread. Ohh la la!

    OKB

I didn't specifically check the pedal threads but I'd imagine they are all French. I did not check the crank length but I did ride it and I can't image they are longer than 170mm by how they felt when I rode it. I have a pretty good sense of that from so many years of riding different lengths.

I love the swoopy top tubes. I did this one some time back. http://velocult.com/tag/motobecane-mixte/. I have another un-restored swoopy on in the shop too. I could sell it as-is if someone is real interested in it it or i could restore it too.

Yes, the rack mounts to the fender

I have two large containers in the warehouse full of vintage pumps, just need to go through it and find one with a proper fit

"A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. I'd still have to bum rides off people." - Ferris Bueller's Day Off :)

Definitely tried this healthy bread because of its packaging. Omegas are bonus points.

Found outside a coffee shop: most rad use of bottle caps ever.

Yesterday inside the garage headquarters of Bikes Del Pueblo, SD's only bike co-op kitchen, a bunch of us organized piles of bike parts donated to us at the recent Veloswap.
After Ken sorted the wheels by size we hung them onto hooks made from bending old spokes, which we hooked onto old bike chains, which we nailed zigzag-style across the rafters.

Outside the garage we hung wheels from beat inner tubes which we tied onto a regular chain anchored between trees.

I have a friend who works makes props and miniatures for the movie industry and he's married to a costume designer. The two of them took one of my old racing jerseys and made a skinsuit onesie for my boy. The childs cycling cap came from PDX.

Does this skinsuit make my butt look big?

So what if I have big feat and hands.

Cute. Summit has plenty of time to grow into this skin suit; what a brilliant idea!

It was a surprise to us for our baby shower. I have my old racing jersey to my buddy years ago. He does miniatures for the movie industry and his wife does costumes. Total shock to me they turned that old racing jersey into a onesie. Pretty cool.

By the time he fills it out he'll be too tall for it unfortunately. He's 8 months old and this jersey is for 1.5 years old. He only has maybe a month or two more with this before he outgrows it lengthwise. Kids's getting way too tall way too quick.

    North Park Toyland Parade 2011

It was a nice Saturday morning in North Park if a little cool and cloudy. There was a good group of bikers ready to roll in the parade. The folks from the Thomas Bike Shop were really helpful getting the bikes decorated and providing some nice treats from Rebecca's Coffee Shop. Yum Yum Yummy! It was a short parade route but well attended with a lot of families and spectators along the sides of University Avenue.

It was good to see Turbo Bob and Barb, Penny and her daughter and dog, Hans, and some new faces. Ho Ho Ho!

It's good to get out and ride!

We had a great time at the Encinitas Holiday Parade where Encinitas main street and 2nd street were closed to cars for the parade. Families were SO eager to OCCUPY their Park(ing) spots. It was interesting to hear from many families that "WE" should do this every month FOR THE KIDS to run around and play on the streets.

On the topic of fire stations: before the downtown LaJolla fire station moved to its current locale on Nautilus across from the high school, it was housed here in downtown proper @ Herschel and Wall St. The present user is the La Jolla YMCA.

My grandfather was captain at that station. SDPD had an office next door where the pillared arch is with a holding tank my father ended up in once. He also had an epic motorcycle crash right in front of the firehouse. Lucky for him that Scripps Hospital was nearby on Prospect St.
