Buffers added to the bike lanes on resurfaced portions of Mira Mesa Blvd. Thank you to the good folks at the City of San Diego for making this part of Mira Mesa Blvd a safer place to ride!

While a bike lane, buffered somewhat at that, is certainly welcome... is it a through route? Last time I saw Mira Mesa Blvd, the bike lane ended with a no shoulder 45-50mph roadway to contend with.

This portion is a bit west of there. Hopefully the rest of Mira Mesa Blvd is slated for resurfacing and restriping. The eastbound segment just east of 805 going uphill has some really bad cracks and bumps in the bike lane.

Plaza de Panama started getting its new bistro tables and chairs today! In my opinion, the tables and chairs make the space a lot more welcoming and usable. I'm looking forward to hanging out here and reading on some afternoons.

Balboa Park's facebook status update earlier mentioned that the plaza will also be getting trees. They don't mention how they will be set up (I'm assuming in planters since this is still a "temporary" setup), but I think that they will add a lot to the space as well.

Partial rental bike inventory at a couple of the numerous rental places in the small town of Skagen, Denmark:

I have ridden a typical Danish rental bike over the past couple of days: fenders, hub brakes front and back, 3 speed hub gearing with grip shifting, rack, frame lock, fully enclosing chain guard: it's your typical townie bike - heavy but comfortable and practical.

I'm pretty sure that the relevant law enforcement out there is the San Diego County Sheriffs and the CHP. Both of those are likely to agree with the sign, including the bad spelling.

We also submitted the complaint last Friday when I first heard of it. As of yesterday nothing was done - so I contacted Councilmember Faulconer who said he'd have his staff get it removed.

Maybe Hans will get to it and we can have a write in campaign for the person who does a better job of keeping the streets safe for cyclists.

Private property or not... it faces the public and as such, may be still subject to laws. I'd rather let the Sheriff decide. Inciting violence against others is never an option.

I went out to the Rose Creek Bike Path by Mission Bay Drive and Damon Street around 9:45 AM this morning (Friday) to trim the tree myself. I brought along my ladder and hand saws. When I arrived, there was a reporter from CW6 shooting video and interviewing riders as they passed by. They laughed when I showed up. No, I'm not with the city. No, I'm not a hired contractor. Yes, I care about the city and yes, I care about the safety of Bike Path users, especially a well used and important bicycle artery and especially just before a holiday weekend. Yada yada yada.... Video at 10:00 PM.

My progress just before the city crew showed up.

Again, my progress just before the city crew showed up

I started hacking away and made some decent progress in a an hour or so. I'm no spring chicken and it was hot out there. The Calvary arrived in the form of a city crew and I was glad to see them. The lead man introduced himself but I can't recall his name. He was a good guy and his crew got right to it. I let them use my ladder which helped them to clear high into the tree branches. While his crew worked on the offending tree, he took up some loppers and proceeded down the bike path, clearing incidental out growth and pruning back shooters. That's how you lead a crew! One of the guys mentioned they were out by La Mesa earlier and it was really hot, not like the beach. Sheesh...

A lot of bikers coming through this section while I and the city crew worked to cut back the tree.

The final clear overhead. Much better!

When they no longer needed my ladder, I gathered up my gear, thanked them and was on my way around 11:45 AM. They still needed to haul away all the trimmings, and sweep up the debris. I'll ride back over there later this evening to get some shots of the final resolution. The guys said it might be difficult to get a truck and chipper in there as there is little room to park along the very busy Mission Bay Drive. Maybe next week when the holiday traffic calms down they can zip in, get it done, and zip out again. They did say they would leave behind a cleared and clean bike path with all the debris stacked off to the side.

To be fair to the City, I submitted my service request on Tuesday 8-27-2013 and the job is essentially completed Friday morning 8-30-2013. From my perspective I say kudos to the City of San Diego for a job well done by City of San Diego employees on a very hot day. I'll go back later to get final images of the cleared bike path.

    =====

Hopefully, we'll get a robust and well designed new bike facility in the foreseeable future; the SANDAG Rose Creek Bikeway project.
There are still some kinks to be worked out but at least it is being addressed.

Hooray!! :oD Thanks so much OKB and the road crew, too! I wonder who tipped off the tv crew. This is so awesome! I was gonna go check on this thing tomorrow on my broomcycle ride (a group I sometimes ride with is planning to ride thru there from UCSD to Fiesta Island on Sunday, so I wanted to see if Rose Creek is clear for large group or not). Will still go thru with my broom tomorrow, tho it looks like there won't be much sweeping needed there!

Thanks so much again. You're my hero! :oD

Rose Creek Bike Path Tree Clean-up: Epilog

I went back around 6:00 PM Friday evening. Most of the heavy branches and debris were removed and the Bike Path was left if fairly good shape. There is still some residual debris scattered about and maybe a good sweeping is in order.

"The crazy dismount section” needs a good sweep to clear the loose debris. A rider I chatted up mentioned it specifically, as he had slid on the loose pine needles coming down the ramp. Could be a real hazard in the dark.

..."Actually, there's low hanging vegetation all along Rose Creek bike path".... jon christopher
True enough. I may get ambitious and take on the task of cleaning up along the Rose Creek Bike Path, bit by bit over time. I've got some hand tools and can just chip away at it before the winter rains commence. I'm thinking also, it would serve the recreational riders and bike commuters who come through here at night. With the days quickly getting shorter around the equinox on September 21st, now is as good a time as any to cut back all the summer growth, cut back all the invading and intruding vegetation, clean and sweep debris off the paths and get everything shipshape for the dark season ahead. Sweepers, Sweepers, man your brooms. Ha! We can make September the "clean and sweep month". If you have a favorite bike path that needs attention, have at it.

SMORG: Will still go thru with my broom tomorrow, tho it looks like there won't be much sweeping needed there!

@ SMORG: Thanks for the kind words. Your broomcycle ride may still be of use through this section. I might find my way out there again tomorrow morning, before the heat comes on, to do a little "detail" work.

@ CT: A cold refreshing beverage sounds so good right now. In fact I think I might open one up. Cheers!

Ride well and be safe out there.

San Diego 6 News at 10 covered it last night. Well done.

That "crazy dismount section" needs major concrete rework. It's an idiotic design. A much more gentle slope to the rest of the path is badly needed.

Old Knotty Buoy:Rose Creek Bike Path Tree Clean-up: Epilog

Admittedly, I don't ride this path that often, but I wonder if it would be possible to have an alternative to the 'crazy dismount section' built to make it easier for cyclists (and pedestrians or people who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices). From this picture at least, it looks like it might be possible to remove the right part of that fence and build up a more gradual ramp to the top with a small retaining wall and fence to make it easier to ride up and down.

Edit: Looks like billd posted a similar comment while I was typing mine. So, +1 to that :)
