If I am on a path/road/whatever that is CLOSED to MOTOR VEHICLES... chances are I'm not going to look out for them... so yes - dangerous. Or... do I need to drive there to demonstrate? If I drive on a path, does it really matter what speed I'm going? I see motorcycles on a path or closed road, I call the cops. They create a danger where none should exist. Do we really need to get into how wide it is? Sounds more like making excuses for the motorcycles which should have known better.

Sorry, sd_mike, but I think "danger" is totally overblown when it comes to bicycling in general (motorcycling, for example, is significantly more dangerous), and is probably the main reason bicycling is not more popular. I'll remember to drive my car slowly on bike paths... not a danger then, right? How about the motorcycle I had dealt with on the Murphy Canyon path a few times in the mornings... I was going 20, he was going 25... but not a danger right? Much like my accident on Dec 6 - the other persons speed doesn't really enter into it. They create a danger by being there. We all deal with enough crap from those on four wheels... we don't need it from others on two wheels. I shouldn't have to be looking out for cars or motorcycles when in a bicycle lane or bicycle path. Those that are there present a danger to the proper users of those facilities. You don't think it is a danger? Fine. Get hit by one, then lets talk. I've been hit already.

sd_mike:I shouldn't have to be looking out for cars or motorcycles when in a bicycle lane or bicycle path. Those that are there present a danger to the proper users of those facilities. You don't think it is a danger? Fine. Get hit by one, then lets talk. I've been hit already.

What is dangerous is not looking out for cars or motorcycles in bicycle lanes.

Remember that motorists often cross bike lanes (like to enter or exit a driveway or alley), and motorists who are preparing to turn right are legally required to enter and drive in the bicycle lane prior to turning.

21717. Whenever it is necessary for the driver of a motor vehicle to cross a bicycle lane that is adjacent to his lane of travel to make a turn, the driver shall drive the motor vehicle into the bicycle lane prior to making the turn and shall make the turn pursuant to Section 22100.

Also, unless posted to the contrary, it's legal to park in bicycle lanes.

Even on bike paths, if your expectation is no motorists, the one time you come around a bend and encounter a street sweeper or some other kind of maintenance vehicle you don't expect, you might be in for quite a surprise.

But anyway, we weren't talking about a bicycle lane or bicycle path for that matter... but Sorrento Valley Road.

<del >I don't know the details or contributory causes</del> of your Dec 6 crash, but I doubt a motorist's mere presence could be a cause of it.

UPDATE: I found the discussion about the crash on pp 35-36 of "Just sayin'". Classic left cross. See Collision Type #8 at bicyclesafe.com. I presume you're fully recovered now?

The drivers who go too fast now will see a new speed limit and will just go 5-10 over that, just good enough to avoid a ticket. Despite the petition NOT to increase the speed limit the city of Encinitas voted to increase the speed limit from 35 to 40 mph further endangering pedestrians and the thousands of visitors to the Quail Botanical garden. To all vehicular cyclist advocates, this is ONE of many reasons why we need more bicycle lanes, sharrows and infrastructure in San Diego County.

Penelope Robles
11 hours ago near San Diego ·

*
I have a story to share.

Please share this story and help me find out who this person CA Plates 4UPH307 is so that I may speak with them and let them know that assault is never the answer and that I may show them in the CVC book where the law states that I may use the lane when there is no bike lane.

On Saturday March 24 2012 myself and my 7 year old friend Dalyce were more then excited to go support the Bayshore Bikeway path that was finished, we happily jumped on our bikes and on to the road. We took Palomar Street from Hilltop heading down towards Industrial for 2 reasons 1. this was the path google maps gave me for bicycle and 2. a child can't pedal 35 mph so we take roads with more then one lane so we wouldn't become traffic.

When we ride she ride as close as safe to the right and I ride a few inches to her left so that cars coming behind us do no Jerry Brown a child(Jerry Brown'd means to pass within 3 feet of a cyclist) and can see that there is a child she wears neon colors or an orange vest.

We had an incident at 10:50 am that morning as we passed the lights were you can enter target before Industrial. Keep in mind this area has 3 lanes for traffic which is why we traveled down this street. A white car with the CA Plates 4UPH307 decided he wanted to drive within 2 inches to my handle bars, freaked out the words that escaped my lips were "What the hell" this apparently made the motorist pull over in to the Hometown Buffet parking lot as we followed I instructed Dalyce "go to the sidewalk and wait for me." The man then proceed to shout at me which at this point he has unclipped his seat belt, why I do not know but in my mind I was sure he was going to get out and beat me up. The words coming out of his mouth were those of an uneducated motorist. "You're suppose to be in the bike lane" " Your only suppose to ride in road that have bike lanes" I tell him if there is no bike lane by law we are allowed to take a lane when necessary "So your suppose to be in the bike lane"

I experience this kind of behavior from motorist daily but this was the last straw as I hyperventilated I dialed 911 repeating the license number. They said they would dispatch a car to look for the vehicle but was there anything done? How is assault with a deadly weapon sane. In LA and SF you can sue a motorist for Harassment.

Those last two allow for that. I'd guess that the chances that he has a history of violence (with a record) are fairly high.

He may have also violated CVC 21703 (tailgating) but it's not clear from her description. Somehow I missed this in the 2012 California MUTCD:

In section 9C.07:
02a The Shared Lane Marking may be placed on roadways that have a speed limit above 35 mph, where there is bicycle travel and there is no marked bicycle lane or shared-use path and the right-hand traffic lane is too narrow to allow automobiles to safely pass bicyclists.
So sharrows CAN be installed on Morena now.

Of course, they could have already been installed on India St, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for it.

From Synthetic under "Funding the wrong projects"

"1) Bayshore bikeway.... the exclusive bike lanes in an area with low automobile traffic... this money could have went implementing exclusive lanes or repaving harbor Dr from navy base to PCH, a critically used artery (work, pleasure).

"2) sharrows - this is better used to fill pot holes or set a solid stripe lane for bikers, OR speed bumps for cars - could have this prevented the ortiz incident ?

"Cars are breaking speed limit laws, these laws are set by traffic engineers so pedestrians and cyclists can judge cars
We need to do all the things "

Sharrows are used on designated bike routes where bike lanes don't fit. Filling pot holes is something cities should do everywhere, but especially on designated bike routes. The money used build the Bayshore Bikeway is designated for new projects so it can't be used for maintenance like filling potholes. And the new section is part of a vision for a continuous bikeway around the bay that, when completed, will attract many more riders than the existing on-street route. We need to be doing all these things and we can if we have the political will to do it. Support the Bike Coalition to help make it happen.
