    Found this:

I'm sending this post to the Critical Mass list in hopes of finding
like-minded riders. If riding for fun and within the rules of the road
appeals to you, then please join the ride.
    - - - - -

There has been quite a bit of interest in Critical Manners rides of late.
Typically Critical Manners rides are on the SECOND Friday of the month.
We'll gather at 7-7:30pm at the Bea Evenson Fountain in front of the Ruben
    H. Fleet Science Museum (big fountain on the east end of Balboa Park) and
depart at 8pm. This is a ride that is within the law and puts a positive
face on bicycling in and around San Diego.
You have probably been part of Critical MASS rides on the LAST Friday of the
month (same origination place and time). Me too. These rides have been
around since their inception in San Francisco, October 1992. They've since
spread around the world and have gained in popularity as a fun bike ride and
as gasoline prices rise/wars are fought over oil territory/climate change
evolves/bicycling gains as a more tenable means of transportation/etc. But
why am I telling YOU this, you already know about Mass.

I have a route planned. You can view it here:
    http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2558013

If you're interested in having a calendar of mass rides in San Diego, you
can get to the Google Calendar here: http://tinyurl.com/d7l8qy

    Events!

SD Velodrome swap meet, 12 April - not just track bikes. All kinds of parts, frames, clothes, posters, people, food. Good times, and the entrance fee (~$3) supports the velodrome.

Tuesday Night track racing starts in April! No specific start date yet, but I'd anticipate the 7th. Races start at 6:30pm. Fun for the whole family!

they seem to time their spring race to the Paris Roubaix each year from what i've noticed. cool, so you go to the swap in the morning, go for a ride or take a nap, and then go to the shop to watch Paris Roubaix with a beer in hand. sounds like a great day to me!

I know that Critical Mass can get up to several hundred riders (if the weather is nice enough). How many riders would you expect for a Critical Manners ride like tonight?

I'm pretty sure the San Diego Critical Mass has exceeded a 1000 riders in at least some of the last several months.

I wouldn't expect a lot for Critical Manners partly because it's new and partly because temperatures are going to be in the mid 50's this evening. Still 10 seems low.

I'm hoping to go but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it.

I took part in the ride from Balboa Park last night: I am not sure exact which event it was - I heard "Gray Matter", "Friday 13th" and "Critical Manners". Either way, it all merged into a group of about 35 riders or so. The ride consisted of two loops - one down the canyon from Park, up Pershing to University, back to Park and to the fountain. The second loop from there over Laurel St. bridge, 6th Ave., Hillcrest, Mission Hills and down to Old Town. Break at the cemetery, and then back up (I mean up!!!) through Mission Hills, 6th Ave. and back to the fountain.

    A ton of fun! :face-smile:

San Diego Velodrome Spring VeloSwap will be on Sunday, April 19, a week after Easter. Come to the VeloSwap, then head over to the other side of the Park for the Earth Day event. Or start at Earth Day and then head over to Morley Field for the VeloSwap and help us finish off the beer! www.sdvelodrome.com. Tuesday, April 7 is opening night for Tuesday Night Racing at the Velodrome. New bleachers and retaining wall. Rain postpones for one week.

Forgot to mention this...I rode to the City Heights Farmers' Market last Saturday and learned about the Mid-City ride from the Bike Kitchen folks (I think). It takes place on every second saturday of the month (Next one is on 5/9) and IIRC, the goal is to ride around for an hour. The ride starts at the City Heights market.

Might conflict with the Roots Festival but if anyone is into American Indie Film, Citizen Video is showing Jim Jarmusch's first film Stranger than Paradise at the Whistlestop Bar. Starts at 4pm and the folks from Focus Film will be there promoting his new film The Limits of Control by giving away run of engagement tickets for the movie. So come out and support your local film and booze purveyors...

This Satuday, May 2, is the Barrio Logan Grand Prix. Last year this was the same day as the Red Bull air race and there were way more riders than spectators.

The Grey Matter/Critical Manners-ish ride will be tomorrow night, 7;30ish/8pm at the fountain. I think the theme is Dukes of Hazzard vs. A-Team, or something. Dress up if you want, but not necessary, as I learned last time!

May I add to that list of bike events:

Mid City Bike Ride Saturday, Sat. May 9, 10:30 AM

San Diego River Days Ride - Sat. May 9th at 9:00

SDBC bike road practice class - Sunday, May 10, at 10:00

thom:@ Protorio and/or Samantha: where does the Critical Manners ride typically go, and for how long? Or is there a set schedule?
The route changes every time. The last few times, the Critical Manners and Grey Matter rides have merged into one ride. The rides I have attended have been quite fast paced, with quite a bit of elevation change, and for 20 miles plus: Think Critical Mass (just with a fraction of the riders); faster, hillier and for longer distances than the average Townie ride, as one reference.

Every 2nd Friday of the month features the "Grey Matter Ride": The ride starts at the fountain on El Prado (sounds familiar?) at 7:00PM. I have only made it to one of these - comparable in length, speed and elevation differentials to CM, but with a lot fewer people (and no running red lights!) - perhaps 10-20 riders. A ton of fun - recommended. Alas, I won't be going - out of town.

Next month's (August) GM ride is "racing" at Fiesta Island: During a 45 minute race window, each rider gets a card for every lap (there are two [partially overlapping] loops on Fiesta Island - approx. 2.5 and 4 miles, resp.) completed (two cards for the long loop and one for the short loop), and the winner is the one with the most cards at the end of the 45 minutes.

If I were to "race" - again, I won't be - I would just do a few leisurely laps (I guess I would aim for three long loops [avg. 16 mph or so] and if I realized I couldn't make it all the way around the third time I would just do the short loop instead) just to collect the cards and have fun!
