I haven't attended the Tour de Fat in the past. The website is a bit sketchy as to details. It looks like the meeting is at Balboa Park. True? Where, specifically. Is there a group ride? I see a reference to a "bike parade" - is that a group ride? Where and when does it start? Sorry for so many questions, but I need details. CCT

Meet at 10 am on Laurel St. just east of Park Blvd. near the giant Moreton Bay fig tree. The "bike parade" is a Sunday morning critical mass, except without the confrontatory attitude. We just take over the streets around Hillcrest and the park as we pass through. Last year we rode west on Laurel, turned right on Third, right on University, right on Park, right on Robinson, then left on Park Blvd. back to the start. Then beer drinking commences.

The beer garden is secured by a double wall of concrete K rail topped with razor wire to prevent those without proper documentation from entering. There is a central guard tower with a belt-fed machine gun tripod and crew. Guards patrol the perimeter with automatic weapons and rake the sand in no man's land between the barriers to detect anyone who might breach the fortifications. Unless you're an insubstantial being like Bruno Ganz's character in Wim Wenders's film "Wings of Desire," you will leave tell-tale footprints that give you away.

You'll just have to attend to unravel the seam between dream and reality!

CCT
The whole event takes place where most other large events in Balboa Park are: On the grass near the northeast corner of 6th and Laurel/El Prado, and takes all day. Yes, the "parade" is a group ride for which registration is needed. A lot of the bikes and riders will be in costume. The ride starts and end in the same location as the venue.

bikingbill:So registration is near the fountain?

No. We meet at the other side of the park on Laurel at the intersection of the park road that goes down to Marston Point, just east of Park Blvd. There's a big Moreton Bay fig there (Ficus macrophylla) where the expo and beer prison will be set up. Not the biggest Moreton Bay fig; that one is over to the north of the fountain. This is the second biggest specimen in the park.

I believe the largest such tree in the Western Hemisphere is in Santa Barbara near the train station.

Is anyone riding Tour de Poway this Sunday, Oct 3rd? Just wondering....

I rode the 65 mile route few years ago on a BikeFriday folding bike. It was very scenic going into Ramona on Hwy 67 and then going east on Hwy 78. The fees are $65 (for the 100, 65, and 50 mile routes) and $55 (for the 26 and 18 mile routes). My only disappointment was that the route was not totally closed-off to automobile traffic (except for Poway Grade) for the steep registration fee.

I might drive up to Poway and park at Poway Rd and Hwy 67. then just ride up to Ramona and back. I've done TdP twice and really like the ride. Only reason I am not doing it this year are scheduling conflicts. I agree it would be nicer if they could block more of the car traffic, especially since they take some roads that don't even have a good bike lane.

I did just sign up again for the Stagecoach Century in January 2011.
Njord Noatun:I attended the SP Walkabout last night: The event was very well attended, and at VC things were bustling. This is one of those "good-feel" neighborhood events that just keeps on getting better, and should not be missed!

Thanks to the good folks at VC -- and other merchants -- for their good hospitality and for putting on a good show!

I walked around SP after dinner around 21:30 or so. Don't know how long this was going to go on for but it seemed like most places were about to close or so. It was still awesome to see all the people just strolling around, not necessarily going anywhere... like when you see all the people on the street in PB it's because they're going to a bar, but here it was just "we're out to walk" and that vibe was just fantastic. I walked by Velo Cult but was too shy to enter. lol What an idiot, I know....

I really liked the 'Music Box' girl at that coffee place on the corner of the next street parallel to Fern. Her outfit and her movements were just fantastic.

I like NP and SP more and more every time I go and I am so glad people post these things on this forum. :)

gavilan:
Hans:Spooky Bike-in Movie Night under the stars Oct 21st.
Sorry Hans, Stace, Jeremy... I can't make it out to this one. Going on a quick cruise for work early on Friday and will be working late Thursday, getting ready.
Bummer cause I like the movie and I love 'movies under the stars'.
Looks like it won't be soggy at all, so hope you have a good turnout. {thumbs up}
It turned out to be quasi-soggy after all so there was no movie, but we did have some new faces show up for the ride thanks to Jeremy's ads in the Reader and Citybeat.
The photo below is from this ride, with the rest of the crew behind me.
You were definitely missed, Gabriela!

=-=-=-=-

Njord Noatun:Anybody else joining the Downtown-Coronado social ride tomorrow?

I am attending - so is Zonal, last time I heard.
Yep, I did. You didn't! Sorry to have missed you, Sigurd - kept an eye out for you to no avail.
The photo below from the meetup page is of those who began this 40-miler (I'm toward the right in black), with only about half of us coming full-circle with the group.
Hope to ride with you again soon - it's been too long since the last 'Wednesday' one with you and David.
