Hello All!
I'm an Italian bike lover and since I'm moving to La Jolla in September to attend UCSD as a reciprocity student I just wanted to ask you all a couple of questions:

a) How bike friendly is San Diego, and specifically La Jolla? (can you go to most places by bike? My previous experiences are: The Woodlands (Houston) = can't go anywhere without a car; Clearwater, Fla = somewhat better but still can't move much with a bike; Bologna, Italy = can go pretty much everywhere with a bike; London, UK = not bad, somewhat bike friendly).

b) I'm looking for a room and I'm wondering where I should search,(also, how far can I live from campus if I want to commute by bike?): I would like to be able to commute to UCSD by bike every day. I'm absolutely not a fan of both cars and public transportation, I would LOVE to be able to move mostly by bike as I do now in Italy, (It's my first time ever in San Diego so I really have no idea).

Plenty of folks commute to UCSD on bike so you won't be alone. UCSD is along my bike commute route as well. How far can/should you live from UCSD - well that depends on how long you want to spend riding each day. Consider that San Diego is not flat. It is not mountainous, but if you commute more than a couple miles you'll cross canyons, hills and things like that.

Lots of UCSD students live in the University Town Center (UTC) area, in condos along Nobel Dr, La Jolla Village Drive. La Jolla itself can be expensive and has lots of upscale shopping, dining, and as such is not much of a "college town".

It's an easy commute to UCSD from lots of places - beach areas like Pacific Beach, La Jolla, the UTC mega-condo complex - Del Mar, Solana Beach, University City, Claremont, Bay Park. The further from UCSD you go the more hills and miles, but the roads are fine for commuting in my opinion and it really just comes down to how many miles and how much effort you're willing to put in.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Yes, many of us commute to UCSD on our bikes.
I concur with the suggestion that you check out the mentioned thread (above).
I work at UCSD and live in Clairemont and have had no issues commuting on my bike. Nowadays I usually go on the bike path both ways but the coastal way (by La Jolla) is pretty and I'll go that way whenever I can. I believe dstone (another forum member who lives in PB) comes the La Jolla way all the time.
Commuting to/from UCSD is definitely doable and quite enjoyable although I would think living in the Mesa might be a bit trickier (longer commutes or the need to multi-mode).

Also, ask in the department where you will be hosted if there are housing email lists. At least at SIO there is a housing forum where people who are interested in renting rooms to students and/or faculty, or students looking for potential roommates, post up.

Good luck!
