Bikepacking. As the post title says. I'm thinking of heading up to Mt Laguna next month on an inagural (for me) overnight trip. I know where a "dispersed" camping spot is that would be perfect for this. Other than there, how many of you have taken overnight tours with a tent? What other suggested destinations are there? I like the idea of heading up the coast, but it's pretty urban and I wouldn't know where to start looking for camping.
Lots of great places just a short train ride north of San Diego. We just did a 90% dirt route between the Irvine and San Juan Capistrano stations. Next time will spend the night at O'Neill Park in Orange County. Or you could head west from Irvine and hit Crystal Cove State Park. Lots of options.
There are some great train-accessible routes around Orange County and both O'Neill and Crystal Cove State Park are gems. O'Neil can sell out on weekends and is one of the nicest parks in Southern California; however, please note that all alcohol is banned and enforced 24x7. Crystal Cove Moro Campground is usually sold out but has some primitive backcountry campsites that are almost always available. Added bonus at Crystal Cove is the Historic District Beach Cottages. These sell out instantly when they are put on-line for reservations but if you are patient, persistent and lucky and you just might score one.
